What Happened To Bernard in 'Westworld' Season 2, Episode 1? [SPOILERS]

Westworld finally returned Sunday, but the Season 2 premiere arguably left fans with more questions than answers. One of the most curious things to watch was Bernard Lowe's journey in a world without Robert Ford (Anthony Hopkins).

Warning: There are spoilers below.

Though viewers already know that Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) is a robot—essentially Andrew Weber reincarnated—humans in the series do not. The second season seems to play with time lapse again, showing Bernard, the head of Delos' Westworld Programming Division, after the robotic hosts first take over Westworld. In the another time lapse, Bernard is shown trying to help the workers of Delos find the remaining human guests staggered throughout Westworld.

Bernard isn't helpful. He's either lost his memory, or is pretending to not know what happened.

Bernard escapes Westworld with Charlotte Hale (Tessa Thompson), the Executive Director of Delos Destinations, Inc. While trying to help her locate "decommission host" Peter Abernathy, he tells Charlotte he'll hack into one of the robots, who will then alert them on Abernathy's whereabouts. The outside world apparently won't help anyone in Westworld until Abernathy is found.

Bernard is clearly distressed and visibly shaking. "Are you sure you can handle this, Bernard? You're shaking," Charlotte says. He tells her he's fine, and waits for her to walk away.

Bernard then extracts a milky white fluid from one of the hosts and injects it into himself. When Charlotte returns, he's no longer shaking and appears composed.

The milk-like substance that hosts drink in Westworld has confused some viewers, though this seems to confirm that the substance is needed for the robots to properly function.

The pinnacle moment of the episode comes when the Delos workers find a sea. Westworld never had a body of water like that before, and everyone is confused about why it suddenly appeared. Even though Bernard was one of the creators and closest to Ford, he can't offer any answers.

"Jesus Christ," one of the workers says. "I think we've found the hosts." Lying in the sea, which no one has seen before that day, are dozens of robotic host bodies scattered throughout the beautiful turquoise water.

"I can't imagine what you went through here, Bernard," one of the workers says, "but there are hundreds of guests out there and they need my help, which means I need yours. Can you tell me what happened?"

Bernard stares at the bodies, looks down, and delivers the most ominous line of the episode: "I killed them. All of them."

Westworld Season 2, episode 2, premiers Sunday on HBO at 9 p.m. ET.
