What Is A Mushroom Burial Suit? Luke Perry's Final Wishes Included Being Buried In One, His Daughter Says

Luke Perry's daughter, Sophie Perry, revealed one of her father's final wishes with an Instagram post.

The late actor was buried in a mushroom suit, a biodegradable garment that will eliminate any contaminants in a body such as pesticides, heavy metals, or preservatives — a process known as mycoremediation. The suit also slowly digests the body with the aid mushroom spores and other microorganisms. The mushrooms will eventually grow above an individuals burial plot.

"In December I went to San Francisco with two of my best friends. One of them, had never been to California, so we went to show him the Redwoods. I took this picture while we were there, because I thought, 'damn, those mushrooms are beautiful,'" Perry wrote on Instagram.

"Now, mushrooms hold an entirely new meaning for me. Any explanation I give will not do justice to the genius that is the mushroom burial suit, but it is essentially an eco-friendly burial option via mushrooms," she added, before encouraging readers to visit the company which creates the burial suits, Coeio.

"My dad discovered it, and was more excited by this than I have ever seen him. He was buried in this suit, one of his final wishes. They are truly a beautiful thing for this beautiful planet, and I want to share it with all of you." Perry continued in her Instagram post.

The suits were the subject of a 2011 TED talk by the company's CEO Jae Rhim Lee, an MIT graduate. The lecture has over 1.5 million views.

"I was inspired by the idea that mushrooms are the master decomposers of the earth and thereby the interface organisms between life and death," Lee told Fast Company in 2016.

Coeio began selling the suits in 2016 and later expanded to Infinity Pods which allow for pets to be buried and for their bodies to decompose in the same way as the mushroom burial suit.

Burial suits cost $1,500 while infinity pods range between $75 and $250, depending on the size needed.
