What Rush Limbaugh Doesn't Understand About Liberals

If "Know Thy Enemy," is a principle of warfare, then Rush Limbaugh is failing the conservative movement as a general. On Friday we flagged the following quote from Limbaugh, with regard to the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico: "What better way to head off more oil drilling, nuclear plants, than by blowing up a rig? I'm just noting the timing here."

This is a bizarre statement because it suggests that environmentalists would actually unleash a terrible environmental catastrophe so as to prevent future development of energy production. But the reason that they oppose off-shore drilling, or subsidies to build nuclear plants, is to prevent calamities such as this! Limbaugh seems to think that they don't actually care about the destruction of oceans or coastal areas, but they wish to prevent the off-shore oil drilling or construction of nuclear plants merely as to end unto itself.

But why would they? The crime Detective Limbaugh alludes to lacks a motive. Opposing massive energy conglomerates is no way to get rich. And mainstream environmentalists don't oppose energy production per se: they use electricity like the rest of us, and they simply urge that we move to renewable sources to provide it.

Limbaugh's caricature of hippies inveighing against nuclear power is a bit out of date. Leading environmental organizations are coming around to the idea that nuclear energy might be a lesser evil than greenhouse-gas-emitting coal or gasoline. Doesn't Limbaugh know that every liberal's favorite country, France, is hooked on nukes?

Some environmental-policy analysts question the wisdom of a massive market intervention, in the form of federal loan guarantees, to aid the construction of nuclear plants. But that is arguably a pro-market position, and it is certainly a far cry from blowing up an oil rig to discourage the development of nuclear power plants.
