When Do Polls Open and Close for Midterm Elections 2018? Times for Polling Locations in Every State

After months of debate and millions spent in campaigning, the highly contested midterm elections are finally upon us.

Polling places will open early in the morning on Tuesday as Americans cast their ballots for Senate, House and governor races around the country. Polls predict that Democrats will flip enough seats to win back control of the House of Representatives, while Republicans are expected to maintain a majority in the Senate.

This year's election cycle is expected to smash voter turnout records for a midterm year, as more than 30 million Americans have already cast early ballots. At least 28 states have already surpassed the amount of early voters who participated in the 2014 midterm elections. Although forecasters do not predict that overall turnout this November will be higher than 2016 levels.

While voter registration has passed in a majority of states, a handful still allow people to register and vote on Election Day, including: California, Colorado, Connecticut, Washington D.C., Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Utah, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
