When Will 'This Is Us' End? Mandy Moore Hints at Show's Conclusion

This Is Us returns for Season 3, but devotees of the popular NBC series are going to want to clutch a box of tissues close for several reasons. After star Mandy Moore said she knew how This Is Us will conclude, she speculated on when she believed it'd officially bow out.

"You would have to ask [creator and executive producer] Dan Fogelman," Moore, 34, told Newsweek on Monday at an event celebrating her fall cover with DuJour. "We are all contractually obligated to do seven seasons, so we are starting three now. We have some time."

Moore plays Rebecca Pearson, a role that earned her a Golden Globe nod in 2017. The Tangled actress last spoke about her knowledge of how This Is Us will end during an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! in July.

Host Jimmy Kimmel cut straight to the chase, asking the "Candy" singer whether they have already filmed scenes for the show's ending—a trick once memorably done by CBS sitcom How I Met Your Mother in 2014. To that, she answered: "Yes, we have."

"I think the ending will be very satisfying for people," Moore told Kimmel. "I think it's very true to what the show evokes from all of us."

Moore explained how the ending was shot early to showcase the cast as they are now, adding: "I think just the nature of our show and the trajectory is that … you know, people are certain ages now, and perhaps they're just going to keep getting older. So [we're] capturing content in the can now."

Moore insisted the show doesn't have a pre-determined end date, despite the cast shooting parts of the end prematurely. She isn't sure whether she was included in any of the ending footage. She also isn't positive whether the actors that were shooting the end scene were aware that's what they were filming at the time, which led Kimmel to suggest they're "the people Dan doesn't trust."

Despite the bleak thought of the show concluding, This Is Us devotees have all of Season 3 to dive into. Moore said she's thoroughly enjoyed filming Season 3 because she gets to explore Rebecca's relationship with Jack (Ventimiglia) in their younger years.

"My favorite part is probably exploring the young courtship years of Jack and Rebecca," Moore explained to Newsweek. "It's fun! The costumes...even the extras, our background and the cool '70s hair and makeup. There's a lightness, a levity of young love and going down that road that I don't feel like my character often gets to explore."

This Is Us airs Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET on NBC.
