Where Do Gen Z Employees Want to Work? Glassdoor Survey Reveals Most Sought-After Places

Move over millennials, the youngest generation is stepping into the workforce.

Companies are gearing up for Generation Z, those born in the mid-1990s and early 2000s, to enter their ranks. One of the world's largest job recruiting sites, Glassdoor, recently published a report detailing just where those young workers want to be employed. In "The Next Generation of Talent: Where Gen Z Wants to Work," Glassdoor revealed the top companies, metro areas, and top reviews left by Gen Zers from surveys on their website. A comparison between Gen Z employees and millennial employees is also available.

Gen Z marks the newest wave of employees entering the workforce, kick-starting their careers in 2019. Glassdoor sought to explore what jobs they're most drawn to. Combining a portion of their job applications from October 1, 2018 through January 11, 2019, Glassdoor crafted a detailed report to give insight on what employers might expect from this generation.

The data showed that the most sought-after jobs for Gen Zers are in software engineering, accounting for 19 percent of applications in a three-and-a-half month period with an average $98,000 salary. After software engineering, the next top-rated jobs included software developer, sales associate, and mechanical engineer, which accounted for 2 percent of total applications.

In the tech industry, the top five employers attracting Gen Z included IBM, Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Salesforce. The top five cities Gen Z generally wants to work in, meanwhile, included New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, and Chicago. Glassdoor also listed Champaign, Illinois, which 1 percent of respondents ranked as their top city to work in.

According to the data, the top companies Gen Z want to work for included Apple, Google, Microsoft, Morgan Stanley and Facebook. Morgan Stanley was the only employer in the finance industry listed.
