White House Releases List of 'Top Tweets' Praising Trump's Coronavirus Response

The White House drew baffled responses from health officials, doctors and critics of President Donald Trump alike on Monday after releasing a list of tweets offering gushing praise of the administration's response to the coronavirus.

The Trump administration has released an onslaught of positive publicity about their containment actions in addition to dozens of posts highlighting Vice President Mike Pence's statements about actions to curb COVID-19 cases across the United States. On Monday evening, White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham demanded Democrats stop making coronavirus a "partisan political issue" and instead "support the decisive actions" Trump is taking to stop its spread. On Twitter, the White House released a document showing Republican lawmakers thanking and congratulating the president for his "outstanding job."

Much of the list shared on Twitter by the White House, entitled, "Praise for the President's Coronavirus Response," included videos of Grisham and Republicans, including Florida congressman Matt Gaetz, applauding Trump's coronavirus actions during Fox News appearances.

"The country can take great comfort in the fact that @realDonaldTrump has built teams to solve problems his entire life. America is armed with some of the best scientists in the world and in a better position to address coronavirus under @POTUS's leadership," Gaetz tweeted, showing a clip of a Fox News segment with the chyron, 'Dems shamelessly use coronavirus to push politics.'

"On behalf of all my colleagues, I want to thank @POTUS for putting @VP in charge of the federal response. It's good to have a former governor running this coordinated response as state and local officials lead our preparedness efforts on the front lines," remarked Maryland Republican Governor Larry Hogan, in another tweet included on the White House press release.

Despite the positive posts from White House and Republican Party social media accounts, U.S. health officials say more than 100 cases have been confirmed across the country as of Monday night. The U.S. surgeon general urged Americans to be calm, although six deaths have been attributed to the coronavirus illness in the past week.

"We should be cautious and take appropriate measures to prepare and protect ourselves, but we should not be afraid," Surgeon General Jerome Adams said. "We've been through this before, and no place in the world is better prepared to handle this challenge."

Nevertheless, the White House account has repeatedly retweeted statements from Pence, the president and other Republicans with the highest of praise.

"Experts agree that the risk to the American people remains low—but we're coordinating the efforts of federal, state, and local governments and private industry to prepare for anything," the White House tweeted Monday night.

Texas Republican congressman Brian Babin offered up another congratulatory comment to the Trump administration in a Twitter remark shared on the White House list Monday: "Today, @realDonaldTrump, @VP Pence & members of the Admin met w/ pharma/biotech companies working to develop the vaccine for COVID-19 to see how the government can assist in accelerating progress. Our leaders are doing everything possible to keep us safe."

The White House did not respond to Newsweek's request for comment before publication.
