What happens next?

The reserves will be chosen. Coaches from the NBA will each choose seven players who were not named starters. Each coach will choose three frontcourt players, two guards and two wild cards from each conference.

Those results will be ready next Thursday (Jan. 30).

Antetokounmpo and James, who are now designated team captains, will make their team selections on February 6. They will "draft" their own starting lineups among the other eight All-Star starters who were announced on January 23.

The captains do not have to keep allegiance with their own conference, and they can trade players if they desire. They did it last year when James traded Russell Westbrook for Ben Simmons.

Then, the captains draft the remainder of their rosters from the reserves who were selected.

Here are key dates for NBA All-Star Weekend 2020 in Chicago:

  • All-Star starters announced: Jan. 23
  • All-Star reserves announced: Jan. 30
  • All-Star Draft: Feb. 6
  • Rising Stars Challenge and Celebrity Game: Feb. 14
  • 3-Point Shootout and Slam Dunk Contest: Feb. 15
  • NBA All-Star Game: Feb. 16

Chicago last held the All-Star Game in 1988 at Chicago Stadium, which was one of the most notorious All-Star weekends in league history.

Larry Bird won the the 3-point shootout in dramatic fashion, hoisting the No.1 finger in the air as he launched the final red, white and blue basketball and walking away as the ball swooshed through the net for the long-range title.

Then, hometown favorite Michael Jordan won the Slam Dunk competition with his "fly from the free-throw line" dunk to beat Dominique Wilkins. Jordan went on to win the NBA All-Star Game's MVP that same year on his home court.
