Who Is Ben Volavola? 'Big Little Lies' Star Shailene Woodley and Boyfriend Are Instagram-Official

Shailene Woodley and boyfriend Ben Volavola took their relationship to the next level this week: kissing selfies on social media. (Ask a millennial—this is a big a step.)
On Wednesday the Big Little Lies star sent an Instagram story photo for her three million subscribers, featuring a lip lock with Volavola. She also posted a shot of the two looking cozy at the Valentino Haute Couture Spring/Summer 2018 during Paris Fashion Week in France. This relationship is now Instagram official and attends-public-events-together official.

Woodley has never been a public dater, or much of a dater at all. In 2014, she told Teen Vogue, "I literally have not had a boyfriend in almost five years." A year later, she told InStyle that she loved easily but had difficulty "finding someone to share my life with." At the time, she said she was "curious" to see what a new romance might bring her: "I could fall in love with an Aussie and move to Australia. Who knows!" She wasn't far off.
Volavola, 27, an Australian-born Fiji native, is an international rugby player. He previously played for the New Zealand Crusaders on a two-year contract, and now plays for a French team, the Bordeaux-Begles. In 2015, Volavola represented his native country, Fiji, at the Rugby World Cup.

He and Woodley, who is 26, reportedly met in the summer of 2017 in Fiji, where the actress was filming the upcoming romance Adrift. In October, an onlooker at one of Volavola's rugby games spotted Woodley decked out in the team's colors. "Shailene was sitting in the stands with two girlfriends while Ben played and went wild when they won," the onlooker told Woman's Day. "She was obviously really proud of him. Apparently, she's been to lots of games this season."
Woodley had been hinting at a man in her life on Instagram, but until this month she hadn't revealed his face.
A little break for this new relationship might be on the horizon, however. Big Little Lies Season 2 is expected to start production this spring, and yesterday HBO announced Meryl Streep will join the cast of the hit drama. The choice between investing time in a loving relationship and investing in time spent with acting legend Meryl Streep could prove tough.
