Who Is John T. Earnest? Male Suspect in Deadly Poway Synagogue Shooting

The 19-year-old man suspected of entering Chabad of Poway synagogue north of San Diego and opening fire Saturday has been identified as John T. Earnest, according to NBC 7 in San Diego.

The shooting happened around 11 a.m. local time in California on Saturday—the final day of Passover. One woman has been confirmed dead and three others were injured and getting treatment at a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

According to the NBC 7 report, Earnest produced an online manifesto in which he took responsibility for arson at a nearby mosque in nearby Escondido last month, and on the message board 8chan said he planned to livestream his shooting Saturday. His account has been deactivated.

In the reported manifesto, Earnest said the shooting suspects for the Pittsburgh mosque, which was six months ago to the day, and last month's shooting at a Christchurch, New Zealand mosque inspired him to carry out the shooting in Poway, which is a San Diego suburb.

At a news conference, San Diego Sheriff Bill Gore said. "This individual was with an AR-type assault weapon and opened fire on the people inside the synagogue."

Poway Mayor Steve Vaus called the shooting a hate crime, according to CNN. Vaus said the congregation acted swiftly to engage the shooter, and that the situation could have turned out much worse.

"I also understand from folks on the scene that this shooter was engaged by people in the congregation and those brave people certainly prevented this from being a much worse tragedy," Vaus said.

The suspect fled the scene, and an off-duty border patrol agent fired at the man, striking the suspect's car. A description of the suspect was released over police radio, and a San Diego police officer spotted the suspect, pulled him over and took him into custody without incident, Gore said at the news conference.

Local and federal officials haven't determined the motive of Saturday's shooting.

Though local officials had not publicly released the name of the shooter, multiple law enforcement officials told NBC that Earnest was, indeed, their suspect. Law enforcement has now indicated Earnest is a suspect in the Escondido mosque arson, which is approximately nine miles away from the Chabad of Poway synagogue.

Eleven people were killed at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh last October, and 50 people were killed at the Christchurch mosque shooting last month.

The Christchurch shooting was cast livestream on Facebook, which tried taking the video down, but the video kept resurfacing.
