Two GoFundMe campaigns created to support the daughters of Keith Porter Jr., a man fatally shot by an off-duty Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent on New Year’s Eve in Los Angeles, have raised over $312,000.
One fundraiser has collected over $57,000, while the other has collected over $254,000.
The Context
A TikTok posted by Porter’s daughter has gone viral, receiving nearly 7 million views. His daughter said, “It was unjust, and I’ve seen things I don’t like, and I want to remind people that this is real life. This is my real life. This isn’t news, this isn’t an article I can just swipe away on. My dad is dead. Please respect him. Say his name. F*** ICE and Black Lives Matter. Justice for Keith Porter Jr.”

The incident resulting in Porter’s death is one of multiple shootings involving federal agents since President Donald Trump took office for his second term. The incidents have raised questions about the use of force by federal agents.

What Happened to Keith Porter Jr.?
Advocates said Porter was firing a gun into the air in celebration of the New Year's holiday, ABC7 Los Angeles reported.
The Department of Homeland Security told Newsweek that an off-duty ICE officer responded to an "active shooter situation" at his apartment complex.
The Department of Homeland Security told ABC7 Los Angeles that the off-duty officer ordered Porter to put down the weapon, and the officer fired his weapon when Porter did not comply. The agency also claimed that Porter fired three rounds at the officer before he died, ABC7 reported.
GoFundMe Campaigns Created for Keith Porter Jr.
Franceola Armstrong, Porter’s mother, said on one of the GoFundMe campaigns that the funds will go “directly toward the care, stability, and future of my granddaughters — including their immediate needs, emotional support, education, and whatever is required to help them heal and move forward.”
“They were his heart. Everything he did, every plan he made, was for them. Now they are left to navigate a world without their father, and my greatest concern is protecting them, supporting them, and making sure they are cared for during this unimaginable time,” Armstrong said on the fundraising page.
Another GoFundMe created by Porter's family calls Porter “a warm, generous, kind, and gentle soul—an awesome son, father, cousin, and nephew.”
Who Was Renee Nicole Good?
The shooting of Porter came shortly before Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was fatally shot by an ICE officer in Minneapolis on January 7.
The Department of Homeland Security said on X that one of several "violent rioters" attempted to "run over our law enforcement officers in an attempt to kill them—an act of domestic terrorism." The agency said the ICE officer, "fearing for his life, the lives of his fellow law enforcement and the safety of the public, fired defensive shots."
State and local leaders disputed the claim that the ICE officer was acting in self-defense.
“They are already trying to spin this as an act of self-defense. Having seen the video myself, I wanna tell everybody directly, that is bulls***," Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey said.
What People Are Saying
Franceola Armstrong, Keith Porter Jr.’s mother, on a GoFundMe page: “On New Year’s Eve, my life was forever changed when my son was taken from us in a violent and tragic act by an off duty ICE agent. No parent should ever have to bury their child, and the pain of this loss is something I would not wish on anyone.”
An ICE spokesperson, in comments to Newsweek: "In order to protect his life and that of others, he was forced to defensively use his weapon and exchanged gunfire with the shooter. Fortunately, our brave officer was not injured while protecting his community. Our officer immediately called the police. The Los Angeles Police Department responded, and the active shooter was pronounced deceased at the scene."
What Happens Next
An ICE spokesperson told Newsweek that the LAPD is investigating the incident.
