Who's That Squaw?

This may come as a surprise to his fans: Kevin Costner speaks like a woman--at least in his new movie, "Dances With Wolves." Costner plays Lt. John J. Dunbar, a Union soldier sent to the Dakotas. He goes native and is taught to speak Lakota, a Sioux dialect, by a white woman raised by the Sioux. In Lakota, men and women use different word endings and expressions. Since he's taught by woman. Costner/Dunbar says things the way no brave ever would. "You speak funny," says an elderly tribesman in the film, the only acknowledgment Costner is talking like a squaw.
