Texas GOP Congressman: Trump 'Playing Checkers' While Our Enemies Play Chess

Texas Republican Congressman Will Hurd warned that 30,000 ISIS fighters are "going to come back" to Syria, and he accused the Trump administration of agreeing to "terms of surrender" rather than a "peace deal" with Turkey.

Hurd, who is the lone black Republican in the U.S. House of Representatives and retiring after this term, said Sunday that he agrees with Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell that Trump's Syria decision was a "grave mistake."

Hurd joined several top congressional Republicans, including Mitt Romney, in condemning Trump's sudden troop withdrawal. He urged military and intelligence agency heads to form a plan to prevent an ISIS resurgence. Hurd said he believes the Trump administration is being outsmarted by U.S. adversaries including Turkey, Iran and Russia.

"Unfortunately, our enemies and our adversaries like Iran, Russia, Turkey, they're playing chess. And unfortunately, this administration is playing checkers," Hurd told CBS News' Face the Nation on Sunday.

Hurd said last week's Trump administration ceasefire led by Vice President Mike Pence looked more like a capitulation to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan than a strong "peace deal" for the Kurds.

"Instead of saying this is a 'peace deal,' unfortunately and I still haven't seen all the details. But what I'm learning, it looks more like terms of surrender than a peace deal," Hurd added.

The 23rd District representative primarily addressed foreign policy issues just one day after warning syndicated columnist George Will that Texas is "already purple," as Republicans lose ground in suburban voting areas. The Republican congressman repeatedly warned about ISIS fighters regrouping in the region and undoing any gains of U.S. and Kurdish fighting forces for the past several years.

'What we could be doing now is bringing in some of the heads of the military, the heads of the intelligence service, the heads of our humanitarian organizations to talk about what are we going to do to prevent ISIS from becoming resurgent, to prevent ISIS from doing some coming back into that region," Hurd said.

"ISIS is going to come back. We know that there is about 30 thousand ISIS fighters that are throughout that region," he added.

When pressed on whether or not he believes Erdoğan should visit the White House next month, he labeled that a "tough question" and asked for more time to respond. Hurd served with the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in the Middle East from 2000 through 2009 before first being elected to Congress in 2014.
