Woman in Argentina Caught Wearing Fake Baby Bump to Smuggle 15 Bricks of Cannabis

A woman has been arrested in Argentina after she pretended to be pregnant in order to smuggle drugs in a fake baby bump, according to officials.

The woman was part of a group traveling from the western city of Mendoza, near the border with Chile, the Argentine National Gendarmerie—which guards the country's border—said in a statement on Wednesday.

The group was heading east to the city of Caleta Olivia, around 1,800 kilometers away on the country's east coast. Officials stopped the group on National Route No. 40.

The woman was caught carrying 15 bricks of weed, hidden inside a fake belly made out of papier-mâché.

A man traveling with the woman was carrying two bricks of cannabis in his bag.

The officers first searched the man, discovering the bricks of marijuana in his black bag. They then spotted the woman who appeared to be pregnant. The officers seized 4.5 kilograms of marijuana in total.

Patricia Bullrich, Argentina's Minister for Security, shared a photo of the woman's baby bump alongside a tweet reading: "NARCO PREGNANCY!"

She also said the woman made a belly out of paste to fake her pregnancy, and used it to hide 15 bricks of cannabis.

"We stopped the fake pregnant woman and her accomplice," Bullrich said, according to a translation of her message.

Police did not reveal the identities of the individuals.

During a separate operation at the San Rafael bus terminal, the Argentine National Gendarmerie caught a man carrying 226 grams of cocaine and 516 grams of marijuana. The passenger was also heading from Mendoza to Caleta Olivia.

This is not the first time a woman's body has been used in an attempt to smuggle drugs.

In 2016, German officials arrested a Colombian woman who was carrying 2.2 pounds of cocaine inside her breasts, Reuters reported. The 24-year-old woman was stopped at Frankfurt airport.

The authorities searched the woman, and found fresh operation wounds under her breasts. The woman said she was in severe pain.

She revealed she had undergone a hastily organized operation, when the drugs were hidden inside her breasts.

At a local hospital, staff cut open the woman and found two packets of cocaine weighing 500g.

A spokesman for customs officials at Frankfurt airport told Reuters at the time that the drugs were worth $220,000. The woman had planned to take them to Spain.

Spokesman Hans-Juergen Schmidt told the agency at the time: "This is the first case in Germany in which drugs have been smuggled in this fashion."
