For Cierra Skory, becoming a mother at just 15 years old was the start of an arduous but rewarding journey.

Decades later, with a newborn baby of her own, she was a witness to one of the proudest moments of her life: her daughter's high school graduation. It was there that her daughter, Aislynn, 18, made a statement so profound that it brought her mother to tears.

Skory, 34, shared the emotional moment in a TikTok video. She told Newsweek about overcoming the challenges of young motherhood and how she feels looking back on it all now.

Overcoming the Odds

The graduation was an especially emotional moment for Skory, who gave birth to her newborn just one day before the ceremony. The hospital staff allowed her and the baby to leave as soon as they were cleared for a quick trip.

Watching her daughter graduate was more than just a ceremony for Skory. "It was like my heart was bursting with pride and healing at the same time," she said. "I remembered her as a baby during the hard times growing up together, the judgment, the fear, the pressure to prove everyone wrong.

"Now that baby was walking across the stage and everything we ever been through was worth it," the mom added.

Skory shared the struggles she faced as a teen mom, saying it was "really hard."

Skory admitted to a period of deep depression, where the "whispers and the judgment" got to her. "Every shortcoming feels like it's the end of the world," she said.

However, Skory said she eventually let go of the negativity. Although she didn't finish high school, she put herself through college, earning a bachelor's degree in business management. This eventually led to her opening a successful candle business which allowed her to send her daughter to private school.

"I believe [that] helped shape her into the amazing young woman she is now," Skory said.

A Bond Forged by Resilience

Skory added that she believed that having a daughter at such a young age created a unique bond between them.

"We grew up together in many ways," she said, adding that Aislynn knows she can talk to her mother about anything without fear of judgment. "I've always made sure she knew I was her mother first, but we also share a closeness that comes from experiencing life's challenges side by side."

Reflecting on her past, Skory had a powerful message for her younger self and other young mothers. "You're doing better than you think," she said. "This moment doesn't define your future; it shapes your strength …

"There is such a stigma around teenage mothers and the odds are always stacked against us, but when you have your back up against a wall, what do you do? I didn't just survive. I rose, I thrived, and I built a life no one saw coming."
