North Carolina Woman Charged After She Allegedly Beat Her Boyfriend's Mom With Frying Pan in Deadly Fight Over a Dog

A woman has been charged with manslaughter after she allegedly beat her boyfriend's mother with a frying pan. Officers found Maria Adame, 67, dead inside her home in Fayetteville, North Carolina, on Friday night, the Fayetteville Police Department said in a news release.

Court documents said Adame and Abigail Marie Tipton, 21, who also lived at the property, had fought over a dog, ABC 13 reported.

WBTV reported that according to the arrest report, Adame's son Eugene left the house while the dispute escalated. The arrest report said Tipton called him before she alerted authorities, WBTV reported.

Tipton initially told police that Adame had come at her with a knife and showed them scratches on her body, according to ABC 13. Police later determined the scratches were self-inflicted.

According to the court documents, she later admitted to restraining Adame and beating her over the head with a frying pan until the pan's handle broke.

Tipton has been charged with voluntary manslaughter, but according to ABC 13, authorities are working to determine if the charges against her in connection with Adame's death could be upgraded.

Cumberland County District Attorney Billy West told the station that the situation was "tragic." He explained that the charges against Tipton could be upgraded if authorities find evidence of intention in the incident.

"What this would take is proof of some type of intentional act other than a fight where she used an improper amount of self-defense or improper amount of force," he added.

West said multiple blows could signal intent and so prosecutors will be waiting for a medical examiner's report to see "how much damage was done." The Cumberland County District Attorney's Office has been contacted for additional comment.

Police were called to Adame's home in the 200 block of S. Cool Spring Street just after 10.30 p.m. on Friday.

Detectives said their preliminary investigation indicated there had been a physical domestic disturbance at the home. During that altercation, Adame had received blunt force trauma injuries, police said. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tipton was taken into custody on Friday night, police said. She is being held at the Cumberland County Detention Center under a $100,000 secured bond, police said.
