Woman, Disabled Daughter Found Shot Dead by Relatives Arriving for Christmas Dinner

A woman and her disabled daughter were found dead in their Detroit home by relatives who turned up for Christmas dinner.

The bodies of the woman, 57, and her 13-year-old daughter were discovered in their home in the 18000 block of Prevost Street in the city's west side at around 4 p.m. on Christmas Day, police said.

Their family was supposed to gather at the home for Christmas dinner, Detroit Police Department Chief James White told reporters at a press conference.

Another one of the woman's daughters turned up with her family after not hearing from her mother all day, White said.

When they arrived at the home, they "looked through the window because she wasn't answering the door and they could see an image of what appeared to be a body laying on the floor," he said. "And then they called the police. Her husband forced entry to the home, discovering her mom and her sister deceased."

The 13-year-old girl had been confined to a wheelchair, he said.

Describing the incident as an "unspeakable tragedy," White said: "It's not often I'm speechless, but you know this is one of those days...I don't know what could have sparked such rage. But my job now is to get this person off the street and to make sure that we bring this family some closure."

White did not identify the victims, but said police were searching for the woman's husband, 62-year-old Dwayne McDonald, who has been identified as a person of interest.

"At this point, we don't know if he is a suspect or a victim himself, but we're very interested in talking to him," he said. "He needs to contact the police immediately because we're going to put all resources out to find him and they're already out and they're going to continue to look until we bring him into custody."

McDonald is not the father of the 13-year-old girl, White said, but lived in the home with the two victims.

Police say McDonald is thought to be driving a gray Buick Lucerne with Michigan license plate EKY 4074.

"He shouldn't be driving a vehicle," White said. "If anyone sees that vehicle, please notify the police immediately."
