Woman Dies After Falling Off Cliff at Popular Selfie Spot in Australia

A woman has died after falling off a cliff at a popular selfie spot in Australia.

Madalyn Davis, from Lincoln, U.K. was at the Diamond Bay cliffs in Vaucluse, Sydney, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The Mirror reported that the 21-year-old is thought to have fallen after she and a group of friends climbed over a fence so they could sit on the edge of the dramatic cliff to watch the sunrise.

Davis had reportedly been at a party not far from the cliffs on Saturday night and headed there with friends at around 6.30 a.m.

Emergency services were called to the scene after her companions couldn't find her. Her body was retrieved from the water four hours later, at around 10.30 a.m.

Marine Rescue NSW tweeted that a crew was searching for a woman on Sunday morning after a group who were taking photos inside the fence "regathered and could not find the woman."

NSW Police said they are investigating the circumstances of the woman's death and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

The U.K.'s Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) confirmed to Newsweek that it was in contact with authorities in Australia after the woman's death.

"Staff at the British Consulate in Sydney are in contact with local authorities following the death of a British woman at Diamond Bay, NSW," an FCO spokesperson said.

According to her social media pages, Davis had been in Australia only a few weeks after spending the last few months traveling in Thailand and Bali.

"Can't believe I've been travelling for a whole month now!" she captioned a picture on Instagram in December. "Not looked back at my old life once (miss my job though) and I am super excited for my future abroad."

Friends have flooded her Facebook page with tributes, with one describing her as a "talented, funny, kind and beautiful girl inside and out."

"RIP to one of the most beautiful, inspiring and funny people I had the pleasure to call my friend," Ceys Phillips wrote on Davis' page. "I'm so glad you were able to experience travelling the world like you said you would."

Jord Salthouse wrote that he and Davis had been at a party together just hours before her death and were "having the time of our lives living our dreams in Australia."

Davis's death comes after a 27-year-old woman died after falling from a cliff at Diamond Bay in August. Last year, tourists were warned against risking their lives for a picture at the dangerous cliff face made popular by Instagram influencers.
