Woman Fatally Stabbed Husband 140 Times With Knives, Meat Cleaver: Police

A woman in Florida has been accused of stabbing her husband 140 times with knives and a cleaver, according to a police report.

In a Palm Springs police report, seen by NBC affiliate WPTV, Ricardo Green, 41, told police that he had found his stepfather Melvin Weller, 62, stabbed to death at his home on the evening of February 11.

When officers arrived, they found Weller on the floor in a pool of blood that had covered more than half the kitchen, according to the network.

Officers found blood smears on the counters, cabinets and walls inside the kitchen as well as a couple of knives and a meat cleaver in the sink.

When they found Weller's wife, Joan Burke, 61, she was lying on a bed in the main bedroom and was awake, but unresponsive.

She was later taken to JFK Hospital, in the nearby city of Atlantis, where an evaluation was ordered.

It was later found that Burke had cuts on the palms of both hands, which investigators said is common for offenders to sustain during a stabbing due to losing their grip on the handle.

Palm Springs investigators determined Weller had been involved in a violent struggle and that he had suffered more than 140 stab wounds across his body.

They also found Weller's skull had been fractured after he was struck on the back of his head by a meat cleaver, according to WPTV.

A tied-up plastic bag was found in the kitchen, which contained a cell phone as well as a blood-covered nightgown. Investigators said they believed the cell phone belonged to Weller.

Burke was arrested on a first-degree murder charge, according to WPTV. On Sunday, a Palm Beach County judge said Burke would be held without bond, the network reported.

Newsweek has contacted the Palm Springs Police Department for comment.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, there were 1,334 homicides in Florida in 2019, the latest year figures are available for. This was a slight increase from the previous year's figure of 1,315. The overall trend for homicides in the state shows a steady increase, from 1208 in 2015. The CDC said the homicide rate in Florida in 2019 was 6.7 per every 100,000 people, which is below the rates in neighboring Alabama and Georgia, which are 12.8 and 8.1, respectively.

In a particularly brutal example of Florida's rising homicide rate, in December, 2021 Palm Beach officers announced that a 14-year-old boy had been stabbed by a homeless man while out riding his bicycle.

Palm Beach Gardens Police chief Clinton Shannon said Ryan Rogers had left his home when he encountered Semmie Lee Williams, 39, and was later stabbed multiple times in the head.

Shannon said: "This appears to be a completely random act. We do not have a motive. I would best describe it as an innocent child victim having a chance encounter with a very violent criminal."
