A woman from Florence, Alabama, was excited to begin married life.

But just months later, her world would be turned upside down.

Misty Fields was a senior in high school when she married Daniel, who was a year older.

Daniel and Misty Fields got married at ages 19 and 18.

...

The pair met when Misty moved into her aunt's home along with her five siblings, just across the street from where Daniel lived.

"As soon as we started talking, that was it," Misty told Newsweek. "We were just together. I grew up in a broken home, so for me, I was just ready for a different future."

With dreams of attending nursing school and building a "normal life," tragedy soon struck the family.

Misty's father was murdered two months after she got married.

The day after she graduated from high school, she and Daniel started raising her five siblings.

The newlyweds were doing their best to balance work with being primary caregivers virtually overnight.

"Going from being their sister to their mom was hard," Misty said. "Day to day, we would get them ready to ride the bus to school, then we would go off to work."

Misty would work until around 7 p.m. in a nail salon, which meant Daniel would be in charge of school pickups and getting supper started.

One by one, Misty's siblings grew up and moved out. To this day, Daniel is like a father figure to them.

The family continues to gather at their home for dinners, and her children often call him when something needs fixing around the house.

He even walked her sisters down the aisle at their weddings.

"He's always just stepped right in," Misty said. "I'm extremely lucky because he was 19 when we took them in. I don't know anyone that would do that at our age."

With most of her siblings having moved out, and only her 11-year-old younger brother still living with them, Misty and Daniel were ready to start a family of their own.

They went on to have four children: Alissa, Landon, Aubrey and Anna.

Misty opened a business and bought her dream house with Daniel.

"I did think, okay, things are finally settled," Misty said. "I don't have to be their caregiver and have that extra responsibility."

Then, things took another disastrous turn when Misty's sister suddenly died in a car accident.

She and Daniel started raising her two sons, Emerie and Ayaan.

"We knew we would step in," Misty said. "Her oldest and my oldest are one month apart, and her youngest and my youngest are three months apart. They grew up together."

Through it all, Misty and Daniel have stayed together for 22 years.

She has also written two books about her life: Hope in the Darkness: Finding God’s Light and The Strong One: How trauma shapes generations and how healing changes them.

Looking back at the legacy they have created, Misty said she could never have known how things would turn out.

"God has definitely blessed us more than I could ever imagined," she said. "He definitely had more in store for us than I could ever have dreamed of."
