A woman's attempt to reclaim an old hairstyle she once changed for a former partner didn't exactly go to plan—but it did go viral.

Laura-Jayne Tiller (@lauraajayneee), 23, a social media manager from the U.K., shared her experience on TikTok after trying to dye her hair half blonde and half black—an edgy look she previously gave up because her ex didn't like it. The video documenting the hair transformation disaster has since racked up over 10,000 likes and 585,900 views.

"When I first attempted it myself I thought there was no hope and would have to go dark all over again and it was a waste of time as it was SUPER patchy and I didn't think it would be possible to get the result I wanted however I walked into my local hairdressers hood up very embarrassed," Tiller told Newsweek.

She began the transformation at home by applying a color remover in an attempt to strip the black box dye she had used previously. She then applied bleach to the left side of her hair and left it on for about 20 minutes, ensuring to do her roots last. But once she washed it off, the results were not what she'd hoped for—her roots turned orange and the rest of her hair appeared uneven and discolored.

"I knew it was gonna go ginger, obviously, but I mean, it's not awful," she said in the TikTok, lifting her hair to show the orange roots.

Moments later, she admitted defeat. "Oh my God, so it's awful," she said.

She then tried to remedy the situation herself, by applying more bleach, with the intention of darkening her own roots. However, her hair remained orange, with her roots developing into the desired platinum blonde shade she set out for.

Tiller explained that the original inspiration for the split-tone hairstyle came from her indecision about whether to go dark or light. "I absolutely loved it!! It gave me the edgy look I've always wanted and I've never had so many compliments on my hair since having it," she said.

Fortunately, her local hairdresser was able to salvage the situation. Using toner, they managed to match the colors properly and restore the half-black, half-honey blonde style she was aiming for.

"I love it so much!" Tiller said.

The relatable hair mishap drew supportive and humorous reactions from fellow TikTok users.

"As soon as you said 'black box dye' I prayed to Thor and said 3 Hail Marys," commented one user.

"My husband hates me blonde but when the feeling strikes, I do it every time. Never let a partner stop you from looking the way you want," said another.

"There needed to be a LOT more bleach on your hair. Really saturated each section. Black box dye is sooo hard to get out," added a commenter named Emma.

Tiller shared an update of the fixed look, and the internet was impressed.

"Beautiful," said one user. "Your hair looks so good," said another.
