Woman Shares 'Abandoned Mall' She Found Under Her Airbnb

Claire Scheulin posted a video to her TikTok last week claiming that the Airbnb she and her friends were staying in was located above an "abandoned mall." The TikTok has over 7 million views and has prompted a multi-part "tour," which has left most commenters feeling a little creeped out.

In the TikTok, Scheulin walks through the abandoned space with the caption, "pov: when your airbnb [sic] has an abandoned mall in the basement."

Many commenters were quick to share that they felt she was in "The Backrooms." According to urban legend, The Backrooms is where one will find themselves if they accidentally teleport out of reality. The Backrooms are rumored to be a never-ending maze of old carpets, fluorescent lighting, old wallpaper, etc.

"Not the yellow hallways get out bestie," commented one user.

In response to the video's massive viewership, Scheulin posted a follow-up video the next day in which she and a friend explained that while the Airbnb was "kind of creepy," they were OK. She also promised to update her audience with a tour of the mall.

"Gets thousands of comments to leave, them: let's explore," joked one commenter.

Her next video, posted later that same day, gives viewers a better idea of the space. The Airbnb appears to be a room in an old hotel. When she and her friends take the elevator to head downstairs, they find themselves in a carpeted room with old furniture. From there they enter the mall. Like any other mall, there are elevators, staircases and storefronts, but here, everything is abandoned.

Though many commenters still found the space to be the stuff of nightmares, others were quick to post that the building is actually a resort/mall in Florida and that it's not as scary as users think.

"This is Hollywood Beach Resort in FL and it's being renovated," said one commenter.

Another said: "Btw this hotel is in Hollywood Beach and used to be a hospital back in the day."

Scheulin's next video was a duet with a TikToker named whomjosh, who confirmed that not only is the Airbnb real, but that it is in the Hollywood, Florida, location users have claimed it to be.

According to Josh, he and his friends once stayed at the Airbnb during a college spring break, and agreed that the place felt like a "weird simulation glitch." He also shared that the mall's cafe was still operational and was usually filled with older people enjoying coffee.

#duet with @whomjosh we still see the old people and the fire alarm woke us up this morning and there’s no fire

In another TikTok posted to his account, Josh shared the Airbnb information, and its address is the same address as the Hollywood Beach Resort.

According to its website, the Hollywood Beach Resort dates to the 1920s. What was once a bustling hotel is now a group of condos that sits above Oceanwalk mall, the now-closed mall that many believe to be the abandoned mall that Scheulin, Josh and their friends all found. More likely than not, one or more of the condos doubles as an Airbnb, giving renters access to the mall from inside the building.

So while Scheulin and her friends were definitely not in The Backrooms, the odd Airbnb accommodation surely made for an unforgettable stay.
