Woman Struck Cops, Threw Raccoon Corpse and Eggs at Abortion Clinic: Police

Police in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, said a woman threw eggs and a dead raccoon at the front of the Northeast Ohio Women's Center and later struck officers when they tracked her down.

Dr. David Burkons, the owner of the clinic, filed the report about the August 15 incident, according to the police report obtained by Newsweek.

Police identified the alleged offender as Melissa Strelec, who was charged with criminal mischief and littering. The Akron Beacon Journal reported that a felony assault charge was bound to the Summit County Court of Common Pleas.

Per its website, the Northeast Ohio Women's Center offers pregnant people a medical abortion—the abortion pill that is given up to two weeks passed a missed period—or a surgical abortion—which is administered up to two weeks passed a missed period.

After the United States Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade in the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization in June, Ohio enforced its 6-week LMP abortion ban, the Center for Reproductive Rights said.

"Pregnant people who seek abortion care must undergo a mandatory 24-hour waiting period and biased counseling," the organization said. "The state bans telemedicine for medication abortion, however this law is preliminarily enjoined."

Harassment and violence against reproductive healthcare providers are not new, however, and the United States Department of Justice shared numerous instances of these types of cases.

For example, a defendant pleaded guilty to a FACE Act violation and other state felony offenses in 2021 after throwing a Molotov cocktail at an abortion clinic in Fort Byers, Florida.

"David Burkons, the owner of the Northeast Ohio Women's Center, reported a female pulled into the parking lot, and threw eggs at the building, along with the egg carton, then left," the police report stated. "Shortly after, the female returned, and threw a dead raccoon in front of the business entrance."

Police identified Strelec as the suspect, but when they made contact with her, she "became irate and struck officers multiple times."

Security footage obtained by the Akron Beacon Journal shows a car pulling into the parking lot before the driver began to throw eggs at the building.

Several volunteers approached the car and attempted to use umbrellas as a shield before the car reversed out of the lot and drove away.

The outlet reported that clinic workers said Strelec returned about an hour later, carrying a bag that contained the raccoon. She threw it at the door and left the area.

Dr. Burkons told the Akron Beacon Journal that he has never experienced that type of incident before.

"There's a little more anger now because they assumed we would close, and that's not the case," he said.

Newsweek reached out to the Northeast Ohio Women's Center for comment and the Cuyahoga Falls Police Department for additional comment.

Abortion clinics in Illinois have reported receiving a number of out-of-state patients following the overturn of Roe v. Wade. A California doctor said she planned to offer abortions on a "floating clinic" to bypass state bans.
