Woman Takes Mom on Trip Before Dementia Takes Hold in Tear-Jerking Viral Video

An emotional video of woman taking her mother to Ireland before her dementia fully takes grip has gone viral online, leaving many people in tears.

Stephanie Martin, shared the clip to Instagram on September 19, which showed her "favorite moment" of her mother "from our 10 day trip around Ireland."

She explained: "My sweet momma was diagnosed with frontal temporal dementia a few years ago. The doctors said she had about 6-8 years before she would completely forget who we were.

"She always wanted to see the Cliffs of Moher, so I got her on a jet plane and made it happen."

In the video we can see that the elderly woman has tears streaming down her face as she looks out on the cliff view, the Burren region in County Clare.

The woman is flanked by Martin and another person as she takes in the experience.

After more clips of her looking around, the footage then cuts to a photograph of the mother posing in front of the jagged cliffs and ocean.

Martin captioned the video, which can be watched here, with the hashtags: "#travel #momma #ftd #life #blessing #grateful #loveher #ireland #happy #memories #moments #views #photography #cliffsofmoher #happiness #smile #instadaily #soakingherup #timestandstill #love #this."

The tear-jerking footage has been viewed by more than 4.7 million people and surpassed 241,000 likes.

Many people rushed to the comments section to share their thoughts on the emotional clip.

One Instagram user, Littlemissmomma, wrote: "I'm bawling watching this. Priceless. So much love and awe and wonder."

Another, Tara_biundo, added: "This is so sweet! I am sure this was one of the most special moments of her life."

Hauoli_o_nalani gushed: "You are the sweetest soul! This makes me want to cry! Time truly is the most precious thing on this planet."

Maria_thaler stated: "My heart aches for you and your family. What a very special moment. Cherish every single moment you can with your sweet, sweet mama."

Julie_7431 admitted: "I'm speechless. Thank you for sharing. You can't begin to imagine how grateful I am."

The U.K.'s NHS website explains that "dementia is the name for problems with mental abilities caused by gradual changes and damage in the brain."

The specific type that the woman in the video has is frontotemporal dementia.

The site explains that this "is an uncommon type of dementia that causes problems with behavior and language.

"Like other types of dementia, frontotemporal dementia tends to develop slowly and get gradually worse over several years.

"The average survival time after symptoms start is around 8 to 10 years. But this is highly variable and some people live much longer than this."

Newsweek have contacted Martin for comment.
