Woman Throws Puppy into Ocean Because She Couldn't Afford Vet Bills—Police

A woman is being sought by police after allegedly throwing an injured puppy into the ocean off the Georgia coast.

The Tybee Island Police Department is asking for the public's help in finding suspect Candy Selena Marban following an incident that occurred in the area of South Beach on Sunday, September 12.

Officers responded to the scene following reports of people throwing an injured dog into the sea.

Marban later told officers that the dog had been injured a week earlier and she didn't have the money to pay for its medical treatment. Marban was issued a city ordinance citation for cruelty to animals and the puppy was taken into protective custody.

The animal was then taken for emergency medical treatment in Savannah. A veterinarian later determined that the puppy's injuries were so severe that the best course of action would be to euthanize it.

Detectives then secured warrants for Marban on a felony charge of aggravated cruelty to animals.

Police are still seeking to locate the suspect as of Tuesday, September 21.

In an update to their original statement, the Tybee Island Police Department said: "First, we appreciate all of your help. We are aware that Marban has ties to Gainesville, GA, and have been in contact with law enforcement there for several days.

"New information suggests that she may be in the Savannah area, but she could be anywhere. Please continue to share this post so that we can bring justice to this case."

A Tybee Island Police Department Facebook post asking the public for information on the whereabouts of Marban has been shared more than 1,700 times.

Police are asking those who know Marban or have any relevant information to contact Detective TJ LeGuin at (912)786-5600 or tleguin@cityoftybee.org.

Felonies Involving Dogs

Earlier this year, a woman from Delaware was arrested on suspicion of stealing a neighbor's therapy dog and leaving him on the side of a road in New Jersey.

Cynthia Yalisove, 63, was arrested at her home in Hockessin on May 14 after allegedly taking Cindy Aman's pet one month prior.

"It was like he just vanished," Aman told the Delaware News Journal. "I was really upset because he looks like a big Muppet and he's a 6-month-old puppy, so he can't defend himself."

The Pyredoodle named Rip was eventually found in Pennsville, New Jersey, after Yalisove allegedly drove there in her black Chevy SUV and dumped it by the side of the road.

Yalisove was later charged with one count of felony theft.
