Woman Shares Problems Larger People Face While Traveling in Viral Videos

Going on vacation is something we have all been missing during the pandemic but sometimes, once on holiday, it can be hard to adapt to our new surroundings.

This problem is clearly more difficult for those who are of a larger body mass, as one woman recently showcased on her TikTok account.

Mary Fran Donnelly, a 27-year-old body positive activist and teacher, has shared her experience via her good-humored and powerful series "Traveling as a Fat Person."

In a series of videos uploaded to the app, Donnelly highlights the very real issue that certain aspects of hotels are not catered to all body types, making it hard for customers to be comfortable.

In the first video of the series, which was taken down but reuploaded on June 16, Donnelly tells the camera: "Welcome to 'Are Hotels Fatphobic?' with me, your resident fat ass, Mary Fran."

She then showcases how she barely fits on the hotel toilet seat, as the sink is too close, before giggling as she tries out a bathroom towel which only wraps around half of her body. This clip has 1.5 million views.

In another video, also shared on June 16, the creator discusses the issues of pool towels, stating: "towels in hotels suck."

Wearing a brigtly colored swimsuit, the activist wraps the larger towel around her body again, joking: "A little bigger, but not much!"

The social media star then heads out to the balcony to sit at a table on a very small chair.

The teacher has to sit side-on, to balance on the seat and, again laughing, she says: "Comfortable and stable!"

Many flooded the comments section to share messages of support for Donnelly.

One TikTok user, Morgan Ramirez, wrote: "Can I just say, you have my exact body type and your confidence brings me so much joy, as well as relating to this 10000000%."

Just Vibing added: "I recently gained 100 pounds and thought about how this would be a great series cause I just went to the beach and experienced some things that wouldn't have happened when I was skinnier like the sand between my thighs trying to get it at the public rinse off."

Tabitui typed: "That snort. Yes!! I'm sure that chair would not hold me!"

Pearpear commented: "I'm obsessed with you I love the energy."

In an interview with Buzzfeed, Donnelly stated she made the videos to highlight the struggles that larger people face when traveling.

She said: "I cope through humor. I was making light of a situation that is a very real stress for fat, plus-size people... my sister and I could only laugh at how absurd it was."

She added: "I don't travel alone because I worry about strangers being upset about sitting next to me on a plane. Will the seat be uncomfortable?

"Will the seat belt fit? Will the towel fit at the hotel? Will the chairs at the pool hold me? Will the tables at the hotel restaurant be comfortable?"

Newsweek have contacted Donnelly for comment.
