After recent reports of planes with bedbug-infested seats, alleged homophobic treatment of passengers and pilots lighting up mid-flight, travelers might want to think carefully about which airline they choose for their next trip.

Skytrax's World Airline Awards have found which airlines provide the best flying experience for customers. The world’s largest annual airline passenger satisfaction survey was compiled from a massive 20.3 million submissions, and includes 335 airlines. People from more than 100 countries participated.

Customers were asked to nominate their overall favorite airline, and then give marks for a number of different categories of the travel experience. Subcategories included cabin service, ground and airport experiences, as well as the onboard products, such as cabin cleanliness and quality of meals.

In addition to an overall winner, there were awards for different categories. Garuda Indonesia was awarded the top prize for the friendliest cabin crew for the fifth year in a row, while China Southern Airlines won "most improved airline in 2018."

Qatar Airways was named as providing the best business class experience, while Thai Airways scooped "world’s best economy class."

In the rankings for best airline overall, Asian and Middle Eastern airlines triumphed, with German airline Lufthansa the only one not from those regions to break the top 10.

Delta Air Lines is the U.S. carrier that received the highest ranking, coming in at 37th place. American Airlines, which has seen a spate of high-profile P.R. disasters in recent years, doesn't crack the top 50, placing at number 71 overall.

If you want to avoid any midair disasters on your next flight, these are the airlines that you may want to check out.
