How Does The World’s Best Scoring Work?

Worlds, best, episode, 4, recap, contestants, audition, Daneliya, Tuleshova, 12, year, old, singer, vonnie, lopez, tone, deaf, score The World's Best contestants are judged by experts on The Wall of the World. CBS

Contestants who compete on The World’s Best undergo the scrutiny of over 50 judges who ultimately determine whether the act moves forward or not. The main judges on the show are Drew Barrymore, RuPaul and Faith Hill. The three judges are able to give a contestant up to 50 points for their performance. Once their scores are entered, they are combined to give an average score. At this point, the act is judged by the 50-member “Wall of the World.” These members are experts in a variety of entertainment fields. Each may choose to add or withhold their vote for the act, which is then added to the averaged score of the three main judges. When the scores are calculated, any act receiving 75 point or more will move on to the next round of the competition.

While we don’t know yet who the six contestant are for tonight’s show, a teaser trailer that released earlier this week indicated that at least two of tonight’s performers will be singers.  In the teaser we get a small taste of 12-year-old vocal wonder, Daneliya Tuleshova’s performance. The talented young singer belts the lyrics of “Rise Up” by Andra Day and Crew Barrymore says the performance “moved me to tears.” In another trailer we hear the dramatic story of Vonnie Lopez , a tone deaf woman who dreamed of singing like the rest of her musical family. She calls her ability to sing now a miracle from God and from the clip it looks like we’re in for a powerful performance.

Once the show kicks off, we’ll update this section with performances and scores.

Act #1: Golden Kings of Kung Fu (China)

The first act of the evening is a group of Kung Fu masters from China who perform a Shaolin routine. Clad in gold, the acts starts with a lot yelling and synchronized movements. The judges seem to thoroughly enjoy the combination of acrobatics and martial arts. RuRuPaul called the performance amazing. Drew Barrymore felt it was a great display of artistry.

The judges scores were 42, 46, 42  for an average of 43.

The Wall of the World gave them 46 points for a total of 89 points. The Shaolin Yanze Kung Fu team moves forward!

Act #2: Daneliya Tuleshova (Kazakhstan)

Tuleshova performed a moving "Rise Up" by Andra Ray.

"I like you very much. We hope for these moments ... you moved me to tears," said Drew.

The judges gave her a combined score of 46 and when the Wall of the World scores were added she ended up with a 96. The judges advised Tuleshova to continue working on her technique.

"There's so much room for her to grow" said one Wall member.

Either way Tuleshova moves forward to the Battle rounds.

Act #3 Nina Conti (England)

Following the vocal wonder is comedian and ventriloquist, Nina Conti. She pulls a couple members of the audience to put on face masks that move via remote control as she does her mask.

RuRuPaul said the act was fun and organic. One of the wall of the World Members said she’s both entertaining and technically great. The American judges gave her an average score of 42. Combined with the Wall of the World, Nina’s final score is 85, allowing her to move on to the Battle rounds.

Act #4: Duo Nigretai (Brazil)

Next up are a pair of acrobatic performers who’s act is both dangerous and exciting. The two swing by every imaginable body part from hair to teeth. Cordon thanks them for their incredible hair and teeth.

Faith calls the act incredible. RuRu thinks it's fascinating and a "world class act," but their scores seem to indicate that they weren't as impressed as they let on. The judges give the act an average score of 37. When facing the Wall of the World, however, the score jumps to 81 allowing the duo to move on to the Battle Rounds.

#5 Emotional Line (Seoul) - 69 score, eliminated

#6 - The Lilliac Band (USA) - 91 score, moving to Battle Rounds

#7 William Close (USA)

Performing with a massive stringed instrument called an Earth Harp, Close's act is ethereal. Cordon says he's never seen anything like it, while Faith called it sexy. The judges gave it an average score of 42. With the Wall of the World, the score jumped to 87 putting Close's earth harp act through to the Battle round.

#8 Los Vivancos (Score 84, moving to Battle Round)

#9 Lee Wei (Score 90 - moving to Battle Round)

#10 Vonnie Lopez

As expected Lopez puts on a big show as she performs Andre Crouch's "My Tribute." She ends with a combined score of 92 as RuRu Paul says they are looking at "The World's Best."
