WrestleMania 35 Coming to New York: The Show's Big Apple History

Weeks before WrestleMania 34 kicked off in New Orleans, the WWE announced the 2019 show would take place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

As first reported by the New York Post, WrestleMania 35 will take place on Sunday, April 7. The Barclays Center in Brooklyn will host a week’s worth of events to follow, including the WWE Hall of Fame, NXT Takeover and the Monday Night RAW and SmackDown Live.

WrestleMania 35 will be the eighth time the “Showcase of the Immortals” has come to the New York and New Jersey area, the last being in 2013 for WrestleMania 29, also at MetLife Stadium. The New York–New Jersey area hosted some very significant shows in the WWE’s history. Here’s a list of all of them:

WRESTLEMANIA

The one to start them all. The first WrestleMania was held in Madison Square Garden and headlined by the tag-team match of Hulk Hogan and Mr. T (with Jimmy Snuka ringside) against Paul Orndorff and Roddy Piper (with Bob Orton ringside). Hogan and Mr. T would win that match to cap off the first of many WrestleManias.

WRESTLEMANIA 2

WrestleMania 2 was held in three locations: New York's Nassau Coliseum, Rosemont Horizon in Chicago, and the L.A. Memorial Sports Arena.

The show at the Coliseum had Randy Savage go over George Steele for the intercontinental title; Jake “The Snake” Roberts defeating George Wells; and Mr. T defeating Roddy Piper in a boxing match. It was a weird show, and thankfully the WWE never did this multi-venue structure again.

WRESTLEMANIA IV

WrestleMania IV was held at the Atlantic City Convention Hall in New Jersey and is well known for holding a 14-man tournament for the vacant WWF World Heavyweight Championship. Every big star in the company was in the tournament, including Hulk Hogan, Andre the Giant, Randy Savage and Ted Dibiase.

Some of the notable matchups included a rematch between Hogan and Andre from their iconic WrestleMania 3 bout, and Randy Savage defeating Ted Dibiase in the finals to capture his first world heavyweight title.

WRESTLEMANIA V

The WWE returned to Atlantic City for WrestleMania V, headlined by the WWF world heavyweight title bout between Hulk Hogan and the champion, Randy Savage.

The story line leading to this match saw the two superstars team up to become the Mega Powers, followed by Randy’s growing paranoia that his manager-wife, Miss Elizabeth, was betraying him for Hogan. The two would clash and the Mega Powers would eventually break up, leading to Randy’s heel turn.

Hulk Hogan would defeat Randy for the belt at WrestleMania V.

WRESTLEMANIA X

WrestleMania X took place at Madison Square Garden, home of the first WrestleMania. The crop of WWE talent in the years had changed drastically in the years leading up to the show. Hulk Hogan was gone from the company, and WrestleMania X would be the last time Randy Savage would get in the ring for the WWE.

The main event pit WWF champion Yokozuna against Bret “The Hitman” Hart, with Hart winning the title and being coronated the new face of the company.

WRESTLEMANIA XX

Madison Square Garden played host once again to WWE’s WrestleMania XX. This show had its ups and downs, most notably the bout between Goldberg and Brock Lesnar. The two superstars were on their way out of the company, and the fans knew it, heckling both competitors during the match. Lesnar and Goldberg didn’t do themselves any favors by phoning the match in and not doing any actual wrestling for several minutes to start. Even having "Stone Cold" Steve Austin as the special guest referee couldn’t save this bout.

However, the show had one of the most touching endings to any WWE program. Earlier in the night, Eddie Guerrero retained his WWE championship against Kurt Angle. The show ended with Chris Benoit defeating both Triple H and Shawn Michaels to capture the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, the first of his career. Eddie would then come out to celebrate with Benoit as the former WCW stars stood tall over the rest of the WWE.

WRESTLEMANIA 29

wrestlemania 29 rock vs john cena John Cena and The Rock squared off during WrestleMania 29 at MetLife Stadium. WWE

MetLife Stadium hosted WrestleMania 29, which was significant for a few reasons. This would mark the first ’Mania for The Shield, one of the most popular factions in recent WWE history. This was also the final ’Mania for CM Punk, who would leave the company in 2014.

The main event pitted John Cena, fresh off winning the 2013 Royal Rumble, against then-champion The Rock. This was a rematch for their “Once in a Lifetime” bout from the year prior.
