'Yellowstone' Spinoff '1883' is Given Extended Order and New Prequel Announced

Paramount+ has confirmed its plans to extend the Taylor Sheridan universe on the streaming platform.

The Dutton family's saga will continue to grow on the streaming platform as it was announced that Yellowstone prequel 1883 would be extended and a new prequel titled 1932 would also be released.

1883 follows James, Margaret and Elsa Dutton (played by Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, and Isabel May, respectively) as they travel west from Fort Worth, Texas to Montana with a group of settlers in order to escape a life of poverty.

The show was extended ahead of its original finale, episode nine, which will be released on Sunday, February 20. It has not yet been clarified how many more episodes have been added to the show.

1883 executive producer David C. Glasser spoke about the franchise in a press statement, in which he said: "Taylor Sheridan has put roots down for the Dutton Family tree that stand strong and tall, with many branches that continue to engage record-breaking audiences.

"It is awe-inspiring to work with Taylor, ViacomCBS and the entire team on this universe."

While an extension order was given to 1883 at ViacomCBS' Investor Day livestream presentation it was not made clear whether this meant the show was renewed for Season 2, or if the first season was simply getting more episodes.

Chris McCarthy, president and CEO of Paramount Media Networks and MTV Entertainment Studios, said: "While most shows franchise near the end of their run, we seized the opportunity to franchise in real time, to drive record growth for both streaming and linear properties, proving the power of ViacomCBS' differentiated model.

"With the brilliant mind and gifted storytelling of Taylor Sheridan, we have created an entirely new world to explore with 1883 while expanding Yellowstone, and with 1932 we will open up a new chapter in this rapidly growing universe."

Teasing the new chapter in the Dutton family saga, it was announced that 1932 "will follow a new generation of Duttons during the time of Western expansion, Prohibition and the Great Depression."

1932 is not the only Yellowstone spin-off in the works, as Paramount+ announced on February 24, 2021 it had ordered a show titled 6666 that is set in present day Texas and follows characters on the Four Sixes Ranch.

Speaking about 1932, Tanya Giles, chief programming officer at Paramount Streaming added: "The incredible storytelling and stellar performances behind 1883 have fueled phenomenal new records for Paramount+.

"Promoting the series through linear sampling on the Paramount Network during its latest record-breaking season of Yellowstone further enabled us to introduce Sheridan's loyal audience to this fantastic new series. We look forward to bringing fans even more of the Dutton's origin story."

A release date for the new episodes of 1883 and spin-off 1932 have not been announced by the streaming platform yet.

1883's ninth episode will premiere on Paramount+ on Sunday, February 20.
