YouTube App Rumored For Nintendo Switch

The Nintendo Switch blends the strengths of mobile and home gaming, but it lacks some applications to stream and watch videos. However a new rumor suggests YouTube will be coming to the console later this week.

According to a thread on Resetera, users report seeing suggestions to download a YouTube app when they search for games on the Nintendo site. There is no product page for YouTube on Switch on Nintendo's site, though an app for the platform is available for 3DS and Wii U. French site NintendoHOME also noticed this YouTube suggestion and claimed the app would release Nov. 8.

Hulu is currently the only non-gaming application on the Switch, launching in November 2017. Japan has NicoNico, its version of YouTube, which was launched in July 2017.

In a 2017 interview with The Washington Post, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime said gaming is the top priority for Switch.

"We built the Nintendo Switch to be a world-class gaming device, meaning we want you first and foremost to play games on the system and have an incredibly fun experience.

We're talking to a range of companies about other services, companies like Netflix, Hulu, Amazon — things that will come in time. In our view, these are not differentiators. What differentiates us is the way you play with the Nintendo Switch and what you can play. And that will continue to be our focus into the future as we continue driving this platform."

Perhaps this week is the right time. With the rumored Nov. 8 release date for YouTube on Switch quickly approaching, fans will know soon enough if the report is true.
