Fortnite's in-game news post late Monday evening revealed the big addition to this week's expected 3.5 update. Instead of a brand-new weapon, Battle Royale players will soon be able to mess around with a Vending Machine. The post doesn't reveal much about how the Vending Machine works, but it will allow players to "trade in spare materials for extra gear."

It sounds like the Vending Machine essentially acts as a converter for resources and weapons. If you've got lots of extra wood sitting in your inventory, the Vending Machine lets you turn it in to score a cool weapon or get more ammo.

For those who follow Fortnite closely, however, this news may not be much of a surprise. Video footage from late last week showcased one player glitching under the map to reveal a Vending Machine near Dusty Depot. As described above, the kiosk sold a Minigun for 250 wood. While it was tucked away in the middle of nowhere for this particular implementation, the machine emits a sound effect to let players know it's there.
This leak likely compelled Epic to reveal the Vending Machine a bit sooner than it might have done otherwise, but at least we know the item is functional and real. Epic didn't provide a release date, but the post describes it as "coming soon." If past update releases are any indication, we'll probably see it on live servers by Thursday, as long as major issues don't delay deployment.

A weapon is generally more interesting than something like a Vending Machine, but it's still nice to see Epic continuing to flesh out Fortnite's Battle Royale map in interesting ways. The Vending Machine sort of falls into the same category as the temporarily scrapped Jetpack item, but recent data mines suggest that's still being worked on as well. With updates like these, we know Fortnite's gameplay has room to grow far beyond its gun roster.
Fortnite is in early access across PS4, Xbox One, PC and iOS.
