The Ford Expedition is getting a mid-generation refresh for the 2022 model year that directly puts the Jeep Wagoneer in its crosshairs. To fight the influx of new competition, Ford is combining its latest in driver assist and infotainment technology with equipment gleaned from the Bronco and F-150 Raptor.
The lineup will continue to consist of vehicles from the base Expedition XL model to the range-topping Expedition Platinum. Ford adds the Expedition Timberline to its model lineup for 2022 alongside the Stealth Performance Package.
Ford designers have modified the exterior of the full-size SUV to feature older styling. It now comes standard with LED headlights, has updated taillights, and is available with a number of new wheel choices. Platinum models get a fresh twin-spar mesh grille and chrome-accented fog lamps.
Ford has added a number of new available technologies to the Expedition for 2022 including BlueCruise, the company's hands-free driving system, a 22-speaker Bang & Olufson Unleashed sound system and the new 12.4-inch instrument cluster. Expedition-specific graphics and animations feature on the cluster as well as off-roading at a and turn-by-turn navigation.
Buyers can upgrade their car's infotainment system form the traditional SYNC 4 offering to the SUNY 4A, which allows for the installation of a 15.5-inch infotainment touch screen. A 12-inch infotainment screen is standard and SYNC 4 allows simultaneous functionalities to appear on the screen. The larger screen has widget-filed interface similar to the setup of Stellantis's newest version of the Uconnect infotainment system.

Beginning with the 2022 model year, the SUV is capable of over-the-air updates.
Ford has given the new Expedition a number of fresh technologies to aid drivers while on the road, and while towing. This includes road edge detection, intersection accident avoidance, rear braking assist, roadway obstacle detection, forward object detection, and a new version of Pro Trailer Backup Assist, which automates the trailer perimeter definition input process.
With its two-row version, the Expedition will remain one of the least expensive full-size SUVs that can be purchased. Further pricing details are expected to be released closer to the model's arrival on dealership lots in early 2022.

Ford rates the 2022 Expedition Timberline as being its most off-road-capable Expedition to-date. Its differentiation from the rest of the lineup starts on the outside where it wears a unique grille and Active Orange accents.
The SUV is higher off the ground than any other Expedition, boasting best-in-class standard ground clearance (10.6 inches) and a wider track. These changes from the traditional Expedition allow for improved approach and departure angles.
Each Expedition Timblerline is powered by a 3.5-liter high-output EcoBoost V6 that produces 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque. That's an upgrade of 40 horsepower and 30 pound-feet of torque over the 2021 Expedition Platinum.
The SUV has Trail Turn Assist, a technology gleaned from the Bronco, and heavy-duty skid plates from the F-150 Raptor.
It wears 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler all-terrain tires and comes with a two-speed transfer case.

Buyers can option their new Expedition Limited or Limited Max with the Stealth Performance Package. It adds a gloss black grille, mirror caps, roof rails, running boards, tailgate appliqué, rear bumper skid plates, fog lamp bezels, headlight housings and taillight housings to the model.
Additionally, red brake calipers and 22-inch black aluminum wheels feature alongside black badging and black Ford oval emblems.
Like the Expedition Timberline, 2022 Expedition models equipped with the Stealth Performance Package have Ford's high-output EcoBoost V6 under the hood.
It comes equipped with a continuously controlled damping suspension to give the SUV a firmer ride quality than the Expedition Limited traditionally sports.
