After Pelosi Tears Up Trump's SOTU Speech, White House Says She Just Ripped Up 'the Survival of a Child Born at 21 Weeks'

Shortly after House Speaker Nancy Pelosi tore up her copy of President Donald Trump's State of the Union address Tuesday, the official White House Twitter account had some harsh words for the Democratic representative from California.

As previously reported by Newsweek, soon after Trump concluded his speech, Pelosi stood up behind him and tore her copy of the address in half. Leaving the House of Representatives afterward, Pelosi explained that she had done so, "because it was the courteous thing to do considering the alternatives."

The White House tweeted soon after the ripping incident, criticizing Pelosi by pointing out some of the people who had been invited to attend the State of the Union address in person.

"Speaker Pelosi just ripped up: One of our last surviving Tuskegee Airmen. The survival of a child born at 21 weeks. The mourning families of Rocky Jones and Kayla Mueller. A service member's reunion with his family. That's her legacy," the White House said.

Tensions appeared to run high between Trump and Pelosi during the State of the Union. At the beginning, Trump refused to shake her hand. Pelosi responded by dropping the traditional introduction to the president, choosing merely to say "Members of Congress, the president of the United States," instead of saying it was her "high privilege and distinct honor" to present him.

The White House's tweet spawned a number of replies from both sides of the aisle. Some criticized Trump's speech while others called Pelosi's actions disrespectful.

"Her legacy is #ImpeachingTrump the most corrupt president in American history!" Twitter user @Kellyk1969 wrote.

"Tomorrow we rip up her impeachment!" Twitter user @JoeyBaboots wrote, referring to the upcoming end to the Senate impeachment trial Wednesday. Trump is expected to be acquitted.

The moment of Pelosi ripping up the speech appears ready to become a meme. The website MakeAMeme.org already has an image of the incident ready to be customized and shared on social media.

Though not widespread yet, a few initial memes from conservatives showing Pelosi have already started to appear, from a visual representation of the White House's response captioned "Never Forget," to an edited video that replaces Trump's speech with a copy of the U.S. Constitution.

Left-leaning versions of the burgeoning meme are, as yet, more rare. However, a few have surfaced, including one from journalist Scott Dworkin, which shares the video with the caption "Speaker Pelosi's rip is mood."

Should Pelosi's rip become a full-fledged meme, it will be the second State of the Union address in a row to generate a Pelosi-related meme. In 2019, an image showing Pelosi seemingly clapping sarcastically at Trump went viral.
