Angry Customer Throws Hot Soup in Restaurant Worker's Face

An incident in which a customer was filmed throwing hot soup in the face of a cashier at a Mexican restaurant is being investigated by police.

CCTV footage of the shocking attack was posted to TikTok by Section_8_, where it quickly racked up more than 7 million views. Ace-Ventura1934 also shared the footage to Reddit, with the resulting video earning over 38,000 upvotes.

In the clip, a woman can be seen speaking angrily to a member of staff and gesticulating towards her food on the counter. At one point, the restaurant worker is seen taking her phone out before the customer picks up the soup with both hands and throws it in the worker's face. The customer then turns and quickly walks out of the eatery.

The incident took place at Sol De Jalisco, a Mexican bar and restaurant at 4201 S. General Bruce Dr. Temple, Texas, on November 7.

The Temple Police Department told Newsweek officers arriving at the scene were told an unknown female subject had called the restaurant to complain about an order.

They said the woman told the restaurant worker during the call that the $10.49 soup she had just purchased was hot and that the plastic lid on top of it had melted as a result.

According to police, following the call the disgruntled customer returned to the restaurant, where a verbal altercation ensued.

She then proceeded to throw the soup at the victim and left before officers arrived. No physical injuries were sustained during the attack.

Temple Police also confirmed that the woman has been banned from the restaurant and that charges are pending.

"We do not condone this type of behavior and hold our citizens to the highest standard," Deputy Chief Allen Teston said. "If a citizen believes they have received poor service we advise them to remain civil until the problem is resolved."

Since the video was first shared to TikTok, another clip has emerged of a woman claiming to be the restaurant worker in question, offering up her own account of what happened.

In the video, she confirmed the woman in the video called the restaurant to complain about soup.

The cashier said the woman was offered a refund or an alternate free meal but apparently "did not want to hear it at all" and began being verbally abusive to her.

"I told her 'ma'am, I can still help you, all I ask is that you do not yell and curse at me,'" the woman in the video said.

The angry customer allegedly told her "I will talk to you any which way I f***ing want" at which point the restaurant worker hung up the phone. That video can be viewed here:

She goes on to explain that a little while later the woman called back demanding to speak to a manager but was put on hold as the restaurant was busy. When the worker returned to the phone "no more than 60 seconds" later, the woman had hung up.

According to the restaurant worker, the woman then came into the restaurant and "continued to curse and scream."

The cashier claims she took her phone out as part of a warning to the woman that if she did not calm down or leave she was "going to call the police." She alleges that the customer responded: "I don't give a f***."

The worker said she then put the phone down and told the woman, again, "I could still help you if you do not yell and curse at me." It was at this point, she says, that the woman threw the soup at her.

"The soup was not as hot when it was fresh, but it was still pretty warm," she said on the video. "If anything, the spices from our soup definitely affected me more than anything. It really felt like I had just been pepper-sprayed."

In a statement posted to Facebook, the owners of Sol De Jalisco said they had been left "shocked" by the actions of the customer.

"The Marquez family does not tolerate such behavior."

Newsweek has contacted Nelly and Sol De Jalisco for comment.

Clashes between staff and customers can and do happen in the restaurant world. One recent incident saw a woman knock a tray out of a server's hand, sending food flying everywhere, after he spilled juice on her shoe.

On the flip side, a member of staff at a Chipotle Mexican Grill restaurant in Baltimore allegedly threw scissors at a customer after an argument between the pair escalated badly.
