Boy, 9, Killed While Sleeping in Bed in Drive-By Shooting

A 9-year-old boy in Georgia died in his bed after he was shot at from a moving vehicle while sleeping.

The Albany Police Department responded to reports of a shooting around 11:00 p.m. on the 1500 block of West Gordon Avenue on August 8.

When officers arrived, they found the boy with a gunshot wound to the head. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police said the child was in bed sleeping when a vehicle passing through the area opened fire, striking the boy.

The boy has not been identified, as there are no details about the suspect or suspects who opened fire, or the vehicle they were driving.

"The Albany Police Department is saddened by the tragic loss this city experienced last night. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family," the department said in a statement.

The Albany Police Department has been contacted for an update into the investigation.

According to the Gun Violence Archive there have been 191 children under the age of 11 who have died in firearm incidents so far this year.

There have also been 484 children under the age of 11 who have been injured by guns as of August 9.

According to the data, 753 juveniles aged between 12 and 17 have been killed by guns in the U.S. this year, with a further 2,015 injured.

A 5-year-old boy was also killed in a drive-by shooting in Mississippi on August 7.

The boy, later identified as ZY'Kerioun Brown, was killed in a shooting on 19th Street and Old Marion Road at around 4 a.m.

A candlelit vigil was held in honor of the young victim on Sunday,

"I am feeling torn. My 5-year-old baby didn't deserve to leave that way," the boy's father, Lavon Tucker, said, via WTOK.

"I don't bother anybody. I go to work every day. For you to come and take my baby in the senseless way you did, that wasn't called for.

"My son was 5, and he was thinking about pre-k. He didn't even see his future. Me being his father, I will be at his school for him dressed in my uniform for my baby. That is not a way for somebody to leave here. I know God doesn't make mistakes and is not my baby. I love you son."

Police are still investigating the shooting.
