Cat 'Senses' Owner's Pregnancy in Heartwarming Video: 'Nature is Amazing'

Heartwarming footage that showed one cat cuddling up to its pregnant owner has delighted the internet.

The video, posted in Reddit's "Aww" forum on Tuesday by u/westcoastcdn19, has garnered more than 41,000 upvotes and over 300 comments while highlighting the commonly held belief that some cats can actually "sense" pregnancy in humans.

"Kitty senses something different," wrote u/westcoastcdn19 in the post's title.

The video is a supercut of various clips filmed throughout the owner's pregnancy. In the first clip, the cat looks suspiciously at its owner's bare belly before gingerly patting and finally sniffing it. Throughout the next several clips, the cat—who has become almost obsessed with its owner's pregnant belly—can be seen cuddling up to its owner and resting its head on her stomach.

Of course, the documentation of the budding cat-baby relationship didn't stop once the baby was born. The video ended with two pictures that showed the cat sitting several inches away from the baby as it does some tummy time in bed. In the photos, the two stare at each other before turning to look at the camera.

"The last photos where they look at each other and look at the camera. Adorable!" exclaimed u/Tottochan.

"Cute! The last scene is just ridiculous!" said u/boys_hole_troll69.

Interestingly enough, the cat seen in u/westcoastcdn19's video isn't the first to take an interest in its pregnant owner's stomach. Several pet owners took to the post's comments section to share that their cats behaved similarly during their pregnancies.

"My cat knew too! Did the same thing, always cuddling up to my belly and once our daughter was born wanted nothing at all to do with her haha," shared u/Undbecks_loves_LoZ.

"Adorable! Our cats did the same thing! Especially our grey cat. She has never been far from our son in 5 years," commented u/weirdmountain.

"My cat did the same thing with my wife for the first baby, when the cat started to do the same again my wife got a pregnancy test, and that's how we found out she was pregnant," u/javisarias added.

Speaking to ABC Australia about whether or not cats can "sense" pregnancies, animal behaviorist Kate Mornement said that cats and dogs "likely perceive hormonal changes that occur with pregnancy due to their amazing sense of smell."

"Their acute sense of hearing also means they probably hear the baby's heartbeat in the later stages of pregnancy," Mornement added.

Dr. Sabrina Kong, a veterinary writer, also told The Dodo that cats can also detect the changes in body temperature that occurs when a woman is pregnant, which is why some cats may become uncharacteristically cuddly when their owners are expecting.

"Since pregnant women are warmer than usual, cats can sense it, and they might be more ready to cuddle and snuggle up with you," Kong explained.

Commenting on a cat's ability to detect subtle changes in humans' bodies, Redditor u/nettnutt2 said: "Nature is amazing."
