'So Dramatic': Cat's Needy Reaction to Having Claws Trimmed Wins Internet

One cat's reaction to having his claws trimmed has left the internet in stitches this week, after a video went viral on video-sharing app TikTok.

Shared on Friday by Courtney Tamborello-Lewis—who uses the TikTok handle courtneyhasalotofcats —the video, which can be seen here, now has more than 7 million views and millions of likes.

Two-year-old Scottish Fold Munchkin cat Fitzgerald Grant lives with his owners in League City, Texas.

In the video, Fitzgerald is seen curled up on Tamborello-Lewis' shoulder and a voice behind the camera says: "Hey buddy, what's wrong?" before Tamborello-Lewis replies: "I trimmed his nails again."

Fitzgerald the cat looks up with big wide eyes, distraught by the ordeal of having his claws trimmed.

Tamborello-Lewis told Newsweek: "All grooming has always made Fitz react this way. Blow drying, nail clips... He knows how to work his mama into snuggles instead."

The Humane Society of the United States confirms that trimming your cat's claws is an important step in their care. In an online resource, they say: "Trimming a cat's claws is an important part of maintaining your pet's health. Not only does a quick trim protect you, your pet, and your family, it can also save your sofa, curtains, and other furniture."

But this ginger cat doesn't seem to see the positive side, and has captured hearts with his adorable reaction.

"I have never seen a cat look so genuinely sad before," wrote one TikTok user. Another commenter said: "Orange cats are so dramatic! Mine also acts like he's been violated/betrayed every time."

It is important to note that trimming a cat's claws is an important part of pet care, unlike declawing which The Humane Society of the United States says can cause lasting physical problems for your cat.

There are plenty of tools readily available for trimming your cat's claws, and guides online can help you to do this safely with minimal stress for you and your feline friend.

"That's funny, so dramatic," wrote one viewer of the viral video. Another commenter said: "Literally the cutest face ever."

"I was blown away by how many views the video has accumulated," said Tamborello-Lewis. "When my husband filmed it my first thought was 'Wow, Fitz, way to gaslight me,' and then the outpour of comments on how sweet and cute he is took over.

"A lot of people think I've actually hurt him, but we have been trimming cat nails for years, my husband was a vet tech—he's just really dramatic."

One comment said: "And the Oscar for leading actor in a dramatic show goes to..."

Many viewers commented on how Fitzgerald was still curling up to Tamborello-Lewis, despite being upset about the claw trim. One viewer wrote: "But he's there 'cause he trusts you so much! Most cats after an unpleasant thing will hide, but he wants you to comfort him."

Tamborello-Lewis replied and said: "He is clingy that way. He knows I won't hurt him."

In the video, Tamborello-Lewis comforts the orange cat and tells him: "It's about your safety buddy, you'll get stuck to the carpet."

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals recommends nail-trimming for your feline friend every 10 days to two weeks and suggests that if your cat is reluctant to let you clip their claws, a trip to the vet or groomer is the best option.
