CNN Anchor Says Fox News, GOP Are 'Q-Anon-ing' Election with 'Disgusting' Hunter Biden Claims

CNN anchor Jake Tapper harshly criticized Fox News and Senator Ron Johnson (R-WI) for suggesting without evidence that a laptop allegedly belonging to Hunter Biden contained child pornography.

Johnson spoke to Fox News' Maria Bartiromo on the network's Sunday Morning Futures about a New York Post story on the laptop which was purportedly owned by former Vice President Joe Biden's son.

Bartiromo suggested a subpoena for the computer indicates the involvement of an FBI agent who's worked on child pornography cases. When she asked Johnson about it, he said she had "just made the connection."

The quote

"It was always a fait accompli that someone from Fox and someone from the GOP would start Q-Anon-ing the race with disgusting allegations/zero evidence," Tapper tweeted on Sunday.

"It was just a question as to who. Now the question is whether their colleagues understand the stink will stick to them if silent."

Why it matters

Hunter Biden has re-emerged as a campaign issue following the New York Post story about his alleged laptop and emails.

The Post article carried a photo of one email that the newspaper alleges shows a member of the board of Ukrainian energy company, Burisma, thanking Hunter Biden for arranging a meeting with his father. The Biden campaign has said that a review of the former vice president's schedule at the time shows no such meeting took place.

The alleged child pornography connection centers around a photo of the cover page of a subpoena in the NY Post story that appears to show a partial signature of Joshua Wilson, an FBI agent who has appeared in past media reporting about child pornography cases.

Fox's Bartiromo pressed Johnson on the possible connection during his interview, saying: "We understand here on Sunday Morning Futures there is more to come. And there is further analysis of the subpoena's handwriting and it suggests that the subpoena was served by an FBI agent whose name is Joshua Wilson, and over the last five years, he has been working on child pornography issues."

"Connect the dots," Bartiromo said. "If an FBI agent is working on child pornography issues for five years, why is he subpoenaing the laptop of Hunter Biden. Is there a connection here? Should this suggest that there's a child pornography issue here on that laptop?"

Johnson did not confirm or deny that the subpoena could have something to do with a child pornography investigation.

"Well, I think you just made the connection," Johnson told Bartiromo.

When Bartiromo pressed him, he demurred on making the claim unequivocally but said that more information would likely be revealed over the coming days.

Context

QAnon is a conspiracy theory that posits that President Donald Trump is secretly fighting an international cabal of Satan-worshiping pedophiles while being opposed by the "Deep State."

The theory is baseless but has been embraced by more than 20 Republican congressional candidates. Part of QAnon's claims includes accusing Joe Biden of being a pedophile. There is no credible evidence to support that allegation.
