Dave Chappelle Says He Went Backstage, 'Stomped' Man Who Rushed Stage

Just when the world finally stopped talking about slap-gate, another comedian has apparently been attacked on stage.

Reports are emerging that Dave Chappelle was attacked while performing stand-up at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on Tuesday evening as part of the Netflix Is A Joke festival.

Towards the end of the show, footage being shared on social media, shows a person running on to the stage and tackling the comedian to the ground.

The attacker was reportedly apprehended by personnel at the event with Chappelle later telling the audience that he "stomped" the man.

Buzzfeed News reporter Brianna Sacks tweeted that the attacker "got his ass kicked by at least 10 people" before he was put in an ambulance by LAPD and LAFD.

In a clip from the audience shared on social media, Chappelle appeared to joke: "It was a trans man."

The comedian was heavily criticized recently for his trans jokes on his Netflix special which prompted a staff walkout back late last year.

There is no information about the alleged attacker's identity yet.

"The show was just ending when the man hopped onto stage and ran at Chapelle, form tackling him to the ground. The comedian had literally just said he now has more security because of all the uproar from his jokes about the Trans community," Sacks confirmed on Twitter.

In another clip from the event, following the alleged attack, Chappelle appears to thank actor Jamie Foxx.

"Shout out to Jamie Foxx by the way," Chappelle can be heard saying in a clip posted by Twitter user E5QUIRE.

"Whenever you're in trouble, Jamie Foxx will show up in a sheriff's hat," he joked.

Chappelle then went on to say that he wasn't sure if the attack was part of the show, saying: "'I don't know if that was part of the show or... I grabbed the back of that n— head, his hair was spongy, absorbent."

Foxx then thanks Chappelle for the show and discusses what a great time he had and promises nothing is going to happen to him.

Chappelle then discusses the alleged attack further and says he "stomped" the man in self-defense.

"I've been doing this for 35 years—I just stomped a n— backstage," he said. "I've always wanted to do that."

Sacks also confirmed from the scene: "Sheer chaos. Then Jamie Foxx comes out in a cowboy hat, looking absolutely shocked, and Chapelle makes a joke about stomping the guy, who is still getting beat up."

This situation comes as the world is still reeling from the Oscars when Will Smith stormed the stage and slapped Chris Rock over a joke he made about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith.

Rock himself was reportedly present in Los Angeles for Chappelle's set on Tuesday and joined the comedian on stage after the alleged attack.

"Dave Chappelle got tackled to the ground on stage! Then a Chris Rock came out and said, 'was it Will Smith!' The wildest s***, I have ever seen!" tweeted one eyewitness, author Julissa Natzely Arce Raya.

This is a developing story.

Newsweek has contacted Chappelle's representatives for comment.
