The Texas Democratic Party and Representative Colin Allred, who is challenging Ted Cruz for his Texas Senate seat in November, are launching a new statewide campaign on Sunday to coordinate their activities ahead of the elections.

The campaign, called "Texas Offense", will begin with an event in Houston to mark 100 days until voters head to the polls. Harris will be joined by ex-Houston mayor Sylvester Turner, Harris County Commissioners Rodney Ellis and Adrian Garcia and Amanda Zurawski, a woman who launched legal action after being blocked from having an abortion which she said put her life at risk.

Allred's challenge to Cruz is widely regarded as the Democrats' best, and perhaps only, chance to flip a Senate seat from the Republicans in November. Cruz only narrowly defeated a challenge from Democratic challenger Beto O'Rourke in 2018, by less than 3 percent.

In a statement sent to Newsweek Allred said: "Throughout my football career at Baylor and the NFL, I've always played defense. But now, along with Texans from all across our state, we are fully on offense to beat Ted Cruz.

"I am a fourth-generation Texan, and no matter what Ted Cruz says, this election is about giving 30 million Texans a Senator who will do the job for all of us. Our grassroots campaign of Texans is ready to win because we cannot afford six more years of Ted Cruz."

According to The Texas Tribune the Texas Offensive campaign will primarily consist of sharing data gathered by Democratic activists calling voters and knocking on doors, which will then be shared with other candidates down ballot.

In a press release, Gilberto Hinojosa, chair of the Texas Democratic Party, commented: "Texas Democrats are fired up and ready to beat Ted Cruz.

"This is a historic partnership that will help galvanize grassroots excitement for Congressman Allred across our state. One conversation at a time, with Texans talking to Texans—we are going to send Ted Cruz packing."

Newsweek contacted the Republican Party of Texas and Representative Allred's press team for comment via online media inquiry form and email respectively.

A University of Houston/Texas Southern University (TSU) poll of 2,257 likely Texan voters conducted between June 20 and July 1 suggested November's Senate race in Texas could be close, with Cruz having a 3-point lead. The survey found 47 percent support for the Republican incumbent against 44 percent for Allred.

A Manhattan Institute survey of 600 likely voters in Texas released in early July put Cruz ahead of Allred by 46 percent to 43 percent of the vote.

Between April and June 2024 Allred out-fundraised Cruz by more than $2.5 million according to financial fillings from the rival campaigns. Over this period, Allred's team said it took in $10.5 million versus $7.9 million for Cruz. However, overall Cruz still recorded having the most money with $12.1 million against $10.4 million for Allred.
