Will 'Dexter: New Blood' Get a Season 2?

The finale for Dexter: New Blood will land on Showtime on Sunday, January 9.

Titled "Sins of the Father", episode 10 of the new series will follow Michael C. Hall's Dexter Morgan as he is forced to deal with dangerous threats to himself and his son Harrison (Jack Alcott).

All Dexter and Harrison want to do is live a peaceful life, but that won't be possible given Angela (Julia Jones) apparently has evidence on Jim, Dexter's pseudonym, that the serial killer will be unable to ignore.

Will There Be a Season 2 of 'Dexter: New Blood'?

Dexter: New Blood was created as a way to make up for the original show's conclusion, which ended on a sour note for fans.

The follow-up was designed to revisit the character of Dexter and give a satisfying conclusion to his story, especially after the original series left things open-ended with the killer faking his own death and living under an assumed identity.

Given the backlash that the original series' finale received it stands to reason that Dexter: New Blood won't make the same mistake, and will provide a definitive conclusion on Dexter's story.

When Dexter: New Blood was first announced in 2020, it was said that the show would only be a limited series consisting of 10 episodes.

This means that there will not be a second season of Dexter: New Blood, though depending on the way the series ends it may well be possible for another spin-off to be made in its aftermath.

At the time the original announcement was made, Showtime president Gary Levine said in a statement shared by TVLine: "We would only revisit this unique character if we could find a creative take that was truly worthy of the brilliant, original series."

Lead actor Hall spoke of giving his character a more definitive ending back in 2017, and in an interview with The Daily Beast said of the original show's finale: "I thought it was narratively satisfying — but it was not so savoury.

"I think the show had lost a certain amount of torque. Just inherently because of how long we'd done it, because of the storytelling capital we'd spent, because our writers may have been gassed...

"Maybe some people wanted a more satisfying... ending for him, either a happy ending or a more definitive sense of closure."

Clyde Phillips, Dexter: New Blood's showrunner who was also at the helm for the original until season 4, said during a virtual panel at San Diego Comic Con in July 2021 that the new show's finale would shock fans.

According to Polygon, he explained: "The ending of this one will be stunning, shocking, surprising, unexpected. And without jinxing anything, I will say that the ending of this new season that we're doing will blow up the internet."

Whether this means Dexter will meet a more permanent end than he did in the original series will be evident following the finale's premiere.

Dexter: New Blood's finale will air on Showtime at 9 p.m. ET on Sunday, January 9.
