Dog Ignoring Owner After Spending 10 Days With 'Grandpaw' Delights Internet

A dog called Duke has gone viral for refusing to go back to his owner after she left him with his grandpa for a few days, where he was fed special breakfasts every morning.

In a video posted on Reddit on Monday by the dog's owner, who goes by the username makeitwork1989, the dog can be seen refusing to walk towards her when she calls his name, tilting his head to the side in defiance.

The caption on the video read: "Spent 10 days with Grandpa while we were on our Honeymoon and now he's refusing to come home. My dad is his favorite person in the world."

The woman later explained that her dad cooks him breakfast every morning, feeding him bacon and cheese, and has all the people at his job site trained to bring treats for him.

According to research published by the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, around 6.3 million companion animals enter animal shelters in the U.S. every year, and 3.1 million of them are dogs. Each year, about 390,000 shelter dogs are euthanized, and 2 million of them are adopted.

The video, which was first shared on the subreddit r/WhatsWrongWithYourDog, has since gone viral, reaching over 35,300 upvotes and 777 comments in less than 24 hours.

Most users told her that her dog has changed owner. One user, atx2004, commented: "I hate to tell you this, but Duke is your Dad's dog."

Sillyme_ImHappy said: "I have one of these too! Grandma is everything. We are at day five of hiding where I can't reach her and refusing to leave grandma's house.... Grandma has another dog lol."

Another user, michaelkbecker, pointed out: "Grandpa puts him in holiday mood, not mean mom and dad that have rules and diets to follow."

And mollypatola said: "Exactly why my dog loves my parents, they don't keep up with the grooming he needs and then at home he has to deal with smaller food portions, his teeth being brushed, and ears cleaned lol."

Burner1212333 commented: "That look away near the beginning says I've made my decision." And BelleAriel suggested: "Awh bless him. Have you asked Grandpa what his secret is?"

Ball1091 added: "Ah gosh he's living the dream, throw in some fishing and swimming in the lake and no dog would return at least you know he's in great hands."

Other users shared their similar experiences. WillieNolson wrote: "Grandpa is our three dogs favorite person. They got all upset when we pack for a trip, but then he shows up to watch them and they are pretty much like, yea, ok, bye. You can leave now."

Another user, cosnanook, said: "We call him 'Grandpaw.' Our dog loves grandpa the most too."

Cashew-Gesundheit joked: "I'm not going back to that uncivilized way of life, where we don't eat ice cream every night. At least that's how we felt when we had to leave Grandpa's..." And CatBedParadise added: "The way he avoids eye contact is hilarious. Bad behebeh!!!!"
