Swimming isn't just fun for dogs, it's also good for their health. A 2016 study found that regular swimming can improve joint function in canines suffering from elbow dysplasia—a genetic condition that causes a dog's elbow bones to grow abnormally, leading to forelimb lameness if not treated.

Researchers from Hartpury University Centre, U.K, explored whether canine hydrotherapy could improve the lives of labradors diagnosed with the condition. Using both healthy labradors and ones with elbow dysplasia, they attached reflective markers to the dogs' legs and used a camera to track the movement of the markers. They found that not only did swimming improve mobility in dogs with an elbow dysplasia diagnosis, but it also boosted the strides of healthy dogs.

Some dogs take to water better than others. Breeds such as labradors and Tollers were bred to catch waterfowl, making them excellent swimmers. Breeds such as pugs and bulldogs struggle with uneven weight distribution and difficulty breathing, making swimming tough.

The American Kennel Association recommends keeping all breeds safe in water with brightly colored life jackets, floatation devices and showing your pet how to get out of the pool or body of water when needed.
