DoorDash Driver Delivering Food Shot Dead

A DoorDash delivery driver was shot dead outside a Maryland home on Thursday morning while delivering food to a customer.

Responding officers from the Prince George's County Police Department in Maryland discovered Noel Njoku, 48, suffering from gunshot wounds inside his car after being shot in the town of Mitchellville at around 12:20 a.m. on Thursday, according to a statement from the local police.

Njoku was transported to a local hospital, but died shortly after from the injuries suffered in the incident. The police revealed that Njoku was delivering food to a local home for DoorDash, an online food ordering platform, at the time of the incident.

The department hasn't yet announced any suspects in the case and confirmed in the statement on Thursday that "detectives are actively working to determine the motive and identify suspect(s)."

In a statement to Newsweek on Friday, DoorDash confirmed Njoku's death and said: "We are deeply saddened by this senseless act of violence and our hearts go out to Mr. Njoku's loved ones at this incredibly difficult time.

"The safety of our community is paramount and we immediately reached out to law enforcement to offer our assistance in any way we can. We are also in touch with his family to extend our full support."

In a separate statement to local station WUSA9, the online food ordering service revealed that representatives from the company "immediately reached out to law enforcement to offer our assistance in any way we can, and are in touch with Njoku's family to extend support."

The driver's family told WUSA9 that he was a father of four from Nigeria. His widow, Noela Njoku, asked for answers in the killing, saying: "I just want an answer! Who killed my husband, leaving my four children for me? Who killed my husband?"

Shootings of people driving for online services including DoorDash, Uber and Lyft are common in the U.S., and a driver for the former was gunned down in Atlanta, Georgia, in May while making a food delivery.

Despite being shot multiple times in the back and hip, the victim still reportedly managed to drive himself to the nearby Atlanta Fire Station 5 where he was in a stable condition.

Also in Atlanta, a passenger was shot multiple times while in a Lyft vehicle in July after an individual in another car fired at the ride-sharing vehicle. The person was conscious and alert when transported to a local hospital.

Newsweek has contacted the Prince George's County Police Department and DoorDash for comment.
