Man Loses Eye After Machete Attack in Front of His Family

A man has lost his eye after allegedly being attacked by a homeless man with a machete at a California beach over the weekend.

Fox 11 in Los Angeles reported that an argument broke out between the father and two homeless people at Dan Blocker Beach on Sunday after the man's family were told they were not allowed to be in the area.

Officers from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department responded to calls of an incident at the Malibu beach, where the man and his four family members were approached by two homeless people.

According to Fox 11, an argument broke out between the father and the two suspects, prompting one of the homeless people, identified as Richard Franck, to pull out a machete and strike the victim with it multiple times.

The sheriff's department told the outlet that Franck then allegedly chased the other four family members down the beach while holding the machete, accompanied by the other homeless person.

The two suspects were later located and detained by the police department and have both been charged with attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.

The father, who has not been publicly identified by the police, suffered cuts across his face, ears and tongue during the attack and was transferred to a local hospital. Fox 11 confirmed that the man lost an eye due to injuries suffered in the incident.

California has the highest rate of homelessness in the nation with more than 161,000 people unhoused, according to the latest report from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Los Angeles city and county reported the second-highest number of people experiencing homelessness in an area in 2020 at 63,706, while New York City had the highest number of homeless people with 77,943.

The state's homeless population was in the news recently when California gubernatorial hopeful and reality TV matriarch Caitlyn Jenner controversially tweeted that they decrease Californians' "quality of life."

There have been several attacks involving machetes in the U.S. over the last few months, including an incident in Columbus, Ohio, where a man was injured after an attack on the steps outside the Franklin County Courthouse in early August.

Meanwhile, in Alabama in May a man allegedly attacked members of his own family with a machete and barricaded himself from police for hours, before being arrested and charged with six counts of attempted murder.

Newsweek has contacted the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for comment.
