'Fortnite' Leaks Reveal Incoming Jetpacks, New Competitive Map

Fortnite update 4.2 arrived Wednesday morning, and data miners immediately went to work. Beyond the recently leaked skins, it appears Jetpacks may also make their way to the game soon, along with a special competitive playlist and map.

Starting with Jetpacks, the traces were first showcased by Fortnite Leaks on Twitter and further validated by trusted data miner DieBuddies. The sources found references in the update's code to a limited-time mode called Close Encounters, which features "close-quarters combat with Shotguns and Jetpacks." The information they uncovered suggests players will be told to double-tap the jump button to take off while holding down jump to apply thrust. Fuel will be limited, however, which means Jetpacks must be used sparingly.

An exact date for the Jetpack's debut has not been revealed, but a challenge for Week 5 requires players to use one. While nothing is confirmed yet, this suggests Epic plans to bring the Jetpack to Battle Royale on or around May 29. Just like before, however, unexpected difficulties in the early access pipeline could delay the Jetpack's debut further. As some fans will recall, the Jetpack was originally advertised to appear in Fortnite's 3.1 update at the beginning of March. It was quickly replaced by the Hunting Rifle and hasn't been officially discussed in a meaningful way since.

Beyond Jetpacks, reddit user Richtoveen also posted screenshots of a new folder in the "Playlists" folder called "Comp." Inside that archive is a data string for "Playlist_Comp_Solo," leading some fans to believe the name stands for a ranked competitive offering. "Be the last one standing in this opt-in proving ground for high-skill players," the file description reads.

The miners have deduced that Fortnite's competitive mode functions much like similar offerings in other shooters. Because the play space is described as a separate proving ground, though, it's possible the competitive map may be differ from the standard one. Given how Epic continues to evolve the Battle Royale map throughout Season 4 with new buildings and objects, a competitive version might remove those extra trappings for a more standardized esports-level experience.

It's worth remembering that Epic plans to host a massive 50v50 tournament at E3 in June, featuring celebrities and pros from around the world. With the convention just a few weeks away, maybe that's where the game's new competitive structure will be formally revealed.

Fortnite is in early access across PS4, Xbox One, PC and iOS.
