'Fortnite' Loki Skin: Is 'Fortnite Crew' Worth Paying For?

Loki is being added to Fortnite as an unlockable character skin, although the cosmetic item will only be available to those with an existing "Fortnite Crew" subscription.

Fortnite is currently four weeks into its Invasion Season, which features pilotable UFOs, mothership experiments that let you earn coveted loot, alien parasites that can drain away your health, and an inexplicable attempt to revive ska music.

The god of mischief's arrival in the game has been timed to coincide with this season, as well as the release of his new Disney Plus series, which just released its fourth episode. This is not the first time that developer Epic Games has collaborated with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), as they hosted similar crossover events for Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame.

Modeled after Tom Hiddleston's version of the trickster (as opposed to any comic-book iteration), the Loki skin will also come bundled with various accessories that you can equip from the locker. These include Loki's regal green cape as a new "Back Bling" option, his scepter as a harvesting tool, a Chitauri chariot glider, and a themed loading screen.

To unlock all these cosmetics, you will need to be a "Fortnite Crew" member in the month of July.

What Is "Fortnite Crew" and Is It Worth Paying For?

"Fortnite Crew" is a subscription service that costs $11.99 a month. It can be purchased directly from the in-game item store or through the battle pass tab.

Being a member of "Fortnite Crew" will not give you gameplay advantages over rival players, nor will it grant you access to any additional modes. Instead, the rewards here are purely cosmetic, much like they are with the seasonal battle passes.

Each month, your "Fortnite Crew" membership will entitle you to the latest battle pass, 1,000 V-bucks to spend in the item store (equating to $7.99), and at least one exclusive costume. For instance, in June the "Mecha Cuddle Master" outfit was included with the subscription, alongside a matching set of accessories to complete the look.

While you can purchase the battle pass and V-bucks allowance separately, these monthly costumes are exclusive to "Fortnite Crew" members. According to the Epic Games website, they will "never be sold to non-Crew members or given away to non-Crew members."

As such, the only way to get your hands on the new Loki skin is to sign up for "Fortnite Crew." As it is a limited-time item, you will need to redeem it before the end of July.

If the Loki skin is all that you really want, you will be able to immediately cancel your subscription after redeeming the costume, so that your payment plan does not renew in August. To do this, go to the in-game "Fortnite Crew" tab and follow the instructions for canceling your membership. Even after doing this, you will still have permanent access to the skin.

On the other hand, if you are prone to spending a little more money in Fortnite, then it might be worth staying subscribed. In addition to the battle pass, you will get 1,000 V-bucks and unique cosmetics that would otherwise cost more than the $11.99 membership.

In related news, this is the final week of Fortnite's "Cosmic Summer" event, meaning that you have until Monday, July 5, to complete any outstanding quests. A guide on how to access the limited time "Freaky Flights" mode (which is one of the objectives) can be found here.
