The press office for California Governor Gavin Newsom has accused President Donald Trump of fundraising off the back of dead soldiers.

S.V. Dáte, a senior White House correspondent for the Huffington Post, shared a post to X which included an email, sent to supporters of the president, offering “National Security Briefing Member.”

The email featured an image of Trump from his recent visit to the Dover Air Force Base in Delaware, where he honored troops killed in the Iran war.

Newsweek has reached to the White House via email for a response.

Why It Matters

On Saturday, the remains of service members who have been killed in the ongoing war with Iran arrived back at the U.S., at a ceremony which was attended by Trump and the First Lady, Melania Trump.

The president was widely criticized at this appearance for his attire. He wore a white baseball cap with gold lettering spelling out “USA,” from his line of branded merchandise. He received further criticism when he was seen wearing the same hat while golfing, days after attending the ceremony.

These pictures of the president–and the recent fundraising email–come at a sensitive moment in the U.S.-Iran conflict, which has already resulted in civilian and American military casualties, soaring oil prices and heightened tensions across the Middle East.

What To Know

Dáte’s post on X read “Trump is now offering 'national security briefings' to his millions of small dollar donors. Using a photo from his recent excursion to Dover, where he honored troops killed in his Iran war by wearing his white campaign baseball cap.”

It included a screenshot of an email, which encouraged “supporters” to claim their spot as a “National Security Briefing Member,” and featured the image of the president from the Dover visit at the top.

The press office for Newsom shared this, writing in a post on X, “Donald Trump is fundraising off of dead soldiers. He is a deeply SICK and DISGUSTING MAN!”

The intention behind the email, and the president’s involvement, are not clear.

Despite this, it has courted widespread criticism online, as social media users expressed shock and discontent at the move.

What People Are Saying

@nativelah, in a post on X: “Trump missed his calling—as an undertaker. Thrives on death and killing.”

@Nele_Coprywriter, in a post on X: “as a copywriter, I can only shake my head.”

@mountainviews in a post on X: “With Donald Trump he can always find a way to go lower. Making campaign money from the deaths of our soldiers—that is low.”

What Happens Next

It is widely considered likely that Newsom will run for president in 2028, but this has yet to be officially announced. Candidates usually make announcements after midterm election cycles.
