'Grow Up': Teen Slammed for Not Watching Sister's Infant While She Showers

The internet slammed a teen after she refused to help her sister out by watching her infant while she showers.

Posted to Reddit's r/AmITheA**hole forum, a teen under the username u/throwra_1039384756, posted her story for the followers of the "AITA" subreddit to share their thoughts. The viral post has over 11,000 upvotes and 6,000 comments.

The Redditor begins her story by explaining that her older sister recently had a baby. The original poster's (OP) mother would go over to help out with the baby and the Reddit user's sister would come over while her husband was working.

Her sister went over to her house. The OP's mother was out running errands and had asked her if she could watch the baby while she took a shower. The Redditor refused, arguing that it wasn't her responsibility. Her sister gave simple instructions as she only had to check on the baby if they woke up.

Hiring someone to babysit your kids can be quite expensive. In a 2021 survey done by Urban Sitter, the average pay is about $20.57 per hour for one child and $23.25 for two children.

"I told her that she can wait til Mom came home to shower and reminded her that she chose to have a baby not me. She got upset and left to go check on her baby again. My Mom came home and went to check on my sister. She later got mad at me asking why I didn't just help my sister this one time. I told her it wasn't my responsibility and she can't expect me to take care of someone else's baby," she concluded.

The Reddit community shared their opinions in the comment section, saying the OP was in the wrong.

"While you are correct that the baby is not your responsibility, you come across as a totally self indulgent, self important, [a**hole]. Unless your sister has been a total b***h to you your entire life, doing nothing with you or for you, never a favor, never a nice thing...then you have zero reason to not do her a very small favor and listen for her baby while she took a shower. Not while she went to work, or shopping, or a nap...A. Shower," u/Realistic_Animator-3 wrote, receiving over 21,000 upvotes.

U/VoodooII questioned, "Are you being f**king serious right now?" Their comment received over 16,000 upvotes.

"Wow, [You're the A**hole] & a huge one at that. Let's hope you never need such a tiny favor from anyone in your family because if they are all as selfish as you, you're never getting any help. YOUR Family IS your responsibility, you sound like a huge brat, grow [the f**k] up, like it would kill you to keep an eye on your baby niece/nephew for 10 minutes so your exhausted sister could shower.

"[You're the A**hole] and i'm so tired of people thinking 'it's not my responsibility/obligation' means 'i do not need to care about/help/be kind to other people.' grow up," u/UnaIsTiredYaDig exclaimed.

U/MadamLibrarian2007 stated, "[You're the A**hole]. It wasn't going to kill you to watch a sleeping newborn for 15-20 minutes once, jeez you sound like a spoiled brat. If you need your sister to do you any kind of small favor I hope she remembers this."
